LAWRENCE, Kan. - No. 2-seed Oklahoma defeated No. 7-seed Baylor 4-2 in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Championships on Friday afternoon.
The Bears were first to get on the board with a clinched doubles point. No. 10 Carmen and Ivana Corley defeated Paula Baranano and Daniella Dimitrov at the top court, 6-3. Baylor's Danielle Tuhten and Liubov Kostenko claimed court three 6-4 against Julia Garcia Ruiz and Dana Guzman. To clinch the opening point, No. 43 Layne Sleeth and Alexandra Pisareva fell 6-4 to Baylor's Isabella Harvison and Anita Sahdiieva on court two.
OU opened singles with three straight court wins. No. 120 Carmen Corley took the quick 6-1, 6-2 victory over Kostenko on court three. Garcia Ruiz then defeated Dimitrov at the No. 5 spot with a 6-4, 6-0 score to tie the match. Emma Staker gave OU the lead on court six after taking down Baranano 6-1, 6-3.
Baylor added another point to its score with a win on court four from No. 84 Harvison over Pisareva, 6-2, 6-3. No. 93 Guzman advanced the Sooners to the semifinals after clinching the 6-2, 6-1 win over Sahdiieva at the No. 2 spot.
When play was halted, No. 52 Sleeth led No. 103 Alina Shcherbinina 6-4, 3-2 at the top court.
The Sooners will face No. 3-seed Iowa State in the next round on Saturday, April 22. Match time will be announced at a later time.
