COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Sophomore
Emre Dodanli won the floor exercise title and the Oklahoma men's gymnastics team placed second at the MPSF Men's Gym Championships Saturday at Cadet West Gym on the Air Force Academy campus. OU scored a 409.500 to finish behind Stanford (423.150) and ahead of Air Force (397.350) and California (388.600).
Dodanli won floor with a 14.400, and scored at least 14.000 on all four of his events in the meet, putting together an impressive 57.300 four-event total. He placed third on high bar with a career-high 14.350, fourth on parallel bars with a career-high 14.350 and scored a 14.200 on vault. The Sooners posted their highest parallel bars score of the season with a 69.950.
Fifth-year senior
Spencer Goodell finished second on parallel bars with his 14.400, tied for second on floor exercise with a 14.100 and placed third on vault with his season-high 14.600. Freshman
Ignacio Yockers placed third on pommel horse with a 13.950.
"I was a little disappointed with our results today," Oklahoma head coach
Mark Williams said. "But we're looking forward to the opportunity to improve before we get to nationals. We'll work hard to fix the mistakes that we made, and we'll come out and hopefully be a little more competitive with the field going into the NCAA finals."
Oklahoma started with a 69.100 on floor, anchored by the 14-plus scores from Goodell and Dodanli. OU then posted a 64.400 on pommel horse, which was capped by Yockers' 13.950. Goodell anchored OU's vault rotation with his 14.600, which followed Dodanli's 14.200. Guimaraes scored a 14.250 to begin the rotation, which ended with a 69.350 for the Sooners. On parallel bars, junior
Zach Nunez started with a 13.450, Camillus put up a 13.500 before OU finished with three straight 14s from Perales (14.250; season high), Dodanli (14.350; career high) and Goodell (14.400). Freshman
Kelton Christiansen notched a career-high on high bar, as OU scored a 68.050. Dodanli's 14.350 was his first career 14-plus score on high bar.
Oklahoma turns its attention to the NCAA Championships, which will be held April 14-15 in University Park, Pa. Selections for the NCAA Championships will be announced next week.
