NORMAN — University of Oklahoma freshman catcher
Easton Carmichael was named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week after registering 12 hits and 13 RBIs in five games last week, the conference office announced Monday.
Carmichael batted .571 (12 for 21) and hit two home runs, two triples and scored six runs to lead Oklahoma to a 5-0 record last week. The Prosper, Texas, product registered a 1.048 slugging percentage and a .591 OBP for the week. In OU's weekend road sweep at Houston, he went 8 for 14 with eight RBIs, a home run, two triples and four runs in the three-game set.
On Friday night, Carmichael went 4 for 5 and hit a three-run triple in OU's 13-1 series-opening win. He hit a three-run home run, tripled, drove in four runs and scored twice to help the Sooners clinch the series on Saturday. He added another two hits and an RBI in the finale on Sunday. Against UNLV on Tuesday and Wednesday, Carmichael went 4 for 7 with five RBIs. He came off the bench in Tuesday's game to go 3 for 3 and drive in three runs. He has hit safely in seven consecutive games.
This is the first weekly Big 12 award for Carmichael and Oklahoma's first conference weekly award of the season.
Oklahoma plays a midweek game at Wichita State at 6 p.m. Tuesday. The Sooners then return home to host TCU in the Big 12 conference opener this weekend at L. Dale Mitchell Park.
