COLUMBUS, Ohio — Fifth-year senior
Vitaliy Guimaraes won the vault title and sophomore
Emre Dodanli won the floor title to lead the No. 1-ranked Oklahoma men's gymnastics team to a 410.000 score and a tri-meet win over No. 4 Penn State (404.450) and No. 6 Ohio State (397.600) Saturday at the Covelli Center. The Sooners won event titles on floor and parallel bars.
Fifth-year senior and Nissen-Emery Award finalist
Spencer Goodell sealed the deal with a career-high 14.450 on parallel bars in OU's final routine of the meet. His effort followed a career-high 14.150 by sophomore
Emre Dodanli, as the Sooners registered a season-best 69.850 on parallel bars.
"I thought we did a solid job on rings, and we were very good on floor," Oklahoma head coach
Mark Williams said. "Then on pommel horse the wheels kind of fell off a little bit. We basically leveled ourselves with the other two teams at that point, unfortunately. On high bar we had a huge miss and kind of brought ourselves down to the pack again. We had to have vault and p-bars, and those guys stepped up and did the job. I'm happy for the victory. We'll take the ugly win. They fought hard through the rest of the meet and were able to separate enough to beat both Penn State and Ohio State."
Oklahoma led the meet by less than a point after four rotations, but extended its advantage and secured the victory by finishing with a 71.150 on vault and 69.850 on parallel bars.
Guimaraes' 14.500 led the Sooners, which notched four scores of 14 or better, on parallel bars. Fifth-year senior
Morgan Seyler started with a 14.050, Dodanli hit a 14.450 and junior
Dan Simmons anchored with a 14.250.
OU's big 70.900 on floor also included four 14-plus scores. Dodanli won the event with a career-high 14.650 and was followed by Goodell hitting a 14.450 in the anchor spot. Senior
Jack Freeman hit a 14.300 and Guimaraes notched a 14.050.
Guimaraes completed the all-around for the first time this season, registering an 83.050.
The Sooners conclude the regular season next weekend at California. The meet is set to begin at 4 p.m. CT.
