Bahl Perfect, Sooners Take Two on Day One in Starkville
March 10, 2023 | Softball
STARKVILLE, Miss. — On day one of the Bulldog Invitational in Starkville, sophomore Jordy Bahl was perfect and No. 1 Oklahoma collected a pair of wins over Southeastern Louisiana and Mississippi State.
OU opened the day with a 13-0 run-rule win over Southeastern Louisiana in five innings before a 7-0 win over RV/RV Mississippi State on their home field.
In game one, Oklahoma (19-1) made quick work of the Lions (19-5), jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the first and putting up another four runs in the second before a five spot in the third. Behind Bahl's stellar performance in the circle, the offense gave her plenty of help, racking up 17 hits in the contest including eight doubles and two home runs.
In the first, a two-run blast from super senior Haley Lee opened the scoring before a dropped fly in center allowed junior Alyssa Brito to race home. An RBI double from freshman Jocelyn Erickson put the Sooners up four after one.
In the second, sophomore Sophia Nugent launched her fourth home run of the season on a three-run shot after a walk to Jayda Coleman and single from Lee. Two batters later, senior Kinzie Hansen laced an RBI double to right field to plate Brito.
The third inning saw OU put up five runs on six hits, including a pair of pinch hits. Following a single from freshman Avery Hodge to extend her team-best hit streak to four games, senior Alynah Torres brought her home on an RBI double to right center. Junior Tiare Jennings ripped a run-scoring double to left field two batters later, followed by a Lee double that scored a pair. Brito concluded the game's scoring with another Sooner double to right field to make it 13-0 OU after three.
Bahl (6-1) retired all 15 batters she faced in just 53 total pitches, striking out eight. It was the sophomore's second individual perfect game and third overall, combining on one a season ago. It marked the 20th perfect game in program history and OU's third no-hitter of the 2023 season.
Versus the Lions, 11 Sooners registered a hit with seven bringing it at least one run. Lee paced OU with a 3-for-3, four RBI performance.
In the night cap versus the Bulldogs (17-6), the Sooners shut out another opponent, their third straight and 14th of the season, beating MSU 7-0.
In the circle, Nicole May was once again lights out, throwing a complete-game shutout and striking out six.
Oklahoma plated one in the first and put up a pair of runs across the second, third and seventh innings.
Lee opened things up with an RBI single in the first to right field after the leadoff batter Coleman singled up the middle. In the second, a run-scoring double from redshirt freshman Quincee Lilio scored sophomore Cydney Sanders prior to an MSU error that allowed Lilio to race home.
The third inning saw OU put up another crooked number, plating two runs on three hits and another Bulldog miscue. Brito doubled home Lee prior to an MSU throwing error from left field that allowed Brito to cross home.
Brito continued her hot streak with her fourth home run of the season on a two-run shot in the seventh to secure OU's 11th straight win.
Lee and Brito each went 2-for-4 to lead OU with Brito bringing in three runs.
May moved to 6-0 on the season with her third individual shutout of the year and kept her perfect ERA at a 0.00. She fanned six and surrendered just two hits and three walks.
OU returns to Nusz Park for a rematch vs. Mississippi State on Saturday at 3 p.m. CT. The game can be seen on SEC Network with Tiffany Greene and Madison Shipman on the call. Fans can listen to the game on 1560 The Franchise 2 (103.3 FM) or nationwide on The Varsity app.
