Zach Nunez registered an 83.400 in the all-around and junior
Dan Simmons notched a 15.050 on vault to lead the No. 2 Oklahoma men's gymnastics team to a 407.650 to 352.550 win over Simpson College Saturday evening at McCasland Field House.
The Sooners posted season-high scores on floor (69.800), still rings (67.300) and vault (72.150) and finished with the top five scorers on four of the six events. Simmons won vault, Nunez won parallel bars (14.150), senior
Jack Freeman claimed the high bar (14.400), freshman
Ignacio Yockers won pommel horse (14.600), fifth-year senior
Morgan Seyler topped rings scoring (14.000) and sophomore
Emre Dodanli won floor (14.450). Simmons, Nunez, Freeman and Seyler all notched OU season-high scores on their respective events.
"We rebounded nicely from last week," Oklahoma head coach
Mark Williams said. "A lot of guys had opportunities to compete that haven't this season and we still boosted our score a little bit from last week. I'm pretty happy with that."
Freeman (14.400), Dodanli (14.450) and fifth-year senior
Spencer Goodell (14.050) all scored better than 14.000 on floor as Oklahoma set the pace early with a 69.800 on the opening rotation. Nunez scored 13.800 and sophomore
Brigham Frentheway scored 13.100. All five scores marked individual season highs, while Nunez and Frentheway posted career highs.
For the second week in a row, Yockers registered OU's highest pommel horse score. Nunez notched a career-high 14.400 and freshman
Mac Seyler posted a season-best 13.800.
Morgan Seyler led the way on rings with a career-high score (14.000), senior
Alan Camillus (13.750) and Simmons (13.400) posted season highs, and Nunez (13.500) and sophomore
Nikolai Kolesnikov (13.200) took their first turns on rings this season. The Sooners built a 204.450 to 174.000 lead at the midway point.
Simmons' vault score matched the second highest in the nation so far this season (entering the weekend). All five OU gymnasts – Simmons, Dodanli (14.500), Guimaraes (14.400), Nunez (14.100) and Freeman (14.100) – scored better than 14.000 on the rotation. Nunez (14.150) and Simmons (12.750) notched season highs on parallel bars. Camillus posted a 13.100 and freshman
Adriel Perales scored 12.850 competing on parallel bars for the first time this season.
Freeman registered a season-best 14.400 on high bar, while freshman
Kelton Christiansen scored 13.500 and Nunez notched a 13.450 to pace the Sooners in the final rotation.
Oklahoma remains unbeaten at McCasland Field House since 2007. The Sooners face a showdown next Saturday, Feb. 11, against No. 1 Stanford and William & Mary at the Field House. The meet is set to begin at 6 p.m.
