Sooners Breeze Through Day One at Nutter Classic

February 24, 2023 | Softball

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. — The No. 2 Oklahoma softball team swept through day one of competition at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic Friday afternoon, beating Cal State Fullerton and Texas A&M by a combined score of 16-0 in 10 innings.

The Sooners (10-1) offense was hot from the start with five extra base hits on the day including a trio of home runs. The pitching staff was equally as dominant, tossing a pair of shutouts and allowing just eight hits on the day to go with 12 strikeouts.

In the opening 8-0 win in five innings vs. RV/RV Fullerton (7-6), Oklahoma was sparked by a 2-for-3, one home run day from senior Rylie Boone and a no-doubt blast from sophomore Sophia Nugent

The Sooners struck in the first inning courtesy of an RBI double from senior captain Grace Lyons that plated sophomore Jayda Coleman after her leadoff walk. In the second, Boone ripped an RBI single that scored redshirt senior Haley Lee from second before Nugent hit her second homer of the season and third of her career on a three-run shot to left field.

Boone put a charge into a two-run homer to right field in the bottom of the third for her fourth career home run and first of 2023.

In the bottom of the fourth, making her first appearance of the season, Kinzie Hansen ripped a double to the right field wall to bring in another OU run and run the final margin to 8-0, Sooners.

In the circle, super senior Alex Storako threw four scoreless innings to collect the win, her third of the season, striking out four, walking one and allowing just two hits. Sophomore Jordy Bahl closed in the fifth by striking out the side and allowing one walk.

The second game of the day saw the Sooners beat RV/RV Texas A&M (11-3) by an identical score of 8-0 in run-rule fashion. Freshman Jocelyn Erickson continued the blazing start to her career with her fifth home run in nine games played.

After junior pitcher Nicole May left the bases loaded with three straight strikeouts at the top of the first, Oklahoma plated four runs in the bottom half of the inning by way of two hits and two Aggie miscues. Hansen reached on a fielder's choice allowing Lyons to scoot home before senior Alynah Torres laced an RBI single to center to score Hansen. The Sooners scored another pair off an A&M error at first base on a ball Boone ripped to the first baseman.

The Sooners put up another crooked number in the third inning, plating four runs on three hits and another Texas A&M error. After Hansen reached on an error and Lee singled to left, junior Alyssa Brito hit an RBI single through the left side to plate Hansen, setting the stage for the freshman Erickson. Entered as a pinch hitter in the nine hole, Erickson blasted a three-run shot to left center to put the game in run-rule territory at 8-0.

May earned her third win of the season (3-0), pitching four scoreless innings and striking out five to go with five hits and one walk. Bahl once again closed for OU in the fifth, allowing one hit and retiring the side with the help of a double play made by Lyons.

The OU pitching staff has shut out opponents in eight of 11 games played and the offense is outscoring the opposition by a margin of 89-9. The two run-rule wins Friday made it seven mercy-rule victories out of OU's 11 games.

The Sooners return to the diamond in Cathedral City on Saturday for another set of games vs. Utah (11:30 a.m. CT) and Loyola Marymount (2 p.m.).
