OU Beats Utah, LMU on Day Two at Mary Nutter

February 25, 2023 | Softball

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. — No. 2 Oklahoma continued its run through the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic on Saturday with wins over Utah and Loyola Marymount.

The Sooners (12-1) beat Utah 10-3 in the first game of the day on a rainy morning in Cathedral City. A pair of Sooners registered two hits in the contest, highlighted by a two-run blast from junior Tiare Jennings.

The Utes (9-4) went up early on an inside-the-park home run at the top of the first as the ball got by left fielder Rylie Boone in the wet conditions. Oklahoma quickly answered in the bottom half courtesy of an RBI double from senior captain Grace Lyons and the two-run Jennings homer. It was Jennings second round-tripper of 2023 and 58th of her career.

OU poured it on in the second inning with six runs on four hits and a Utah error. The outburst began with a Ute miscue that allowed senior Alynah Torres to cross home on a bases-loaded pitch to Haley Lee. Freshman Jocelyn Erickson then brought in a pair with a double to left before an Alyssa Brito two-RBI single.

The Utes strung together another pair of runs across the third and fourth innings on a fielder's choice RBI and solo home run to left center.

OU plated its 10th run in the fourth inning on an RBI single from senior Kinzie Hansen to bring the final to 10-3.

Seven Sooners recorded a hit in the contest with six bringing in at least one run. Jennings (2-for-3) and Erickson (2-for-4) paced OU at the plate while sophomore Jordy Bahl collected the win in the circle. Bahl struck out five in 5.1 innings of work, allowing three runs on five hits and a pair of walks. Junior Nicole May closed with 1.1 scoreless innings with a pair of strikeouts.

The Sooners turned around approximately 30 minutes later to run rule Loyola Marymount in five innings by a final of 10-1.

Oklahoma came out swinging with three runs in the first. Lee started things with an RBI double down the right line before an RBI groundout from Erickson. Hansen closed the scoring in the first with an RBI single to right field.

Oklahoma followed its three-run first with a four-run second inning. A Rylie Boone RBI double sparked things before junior Jayda Coleman ripped her first home run of 2023 on a two-run shot to left center. The frosh Erickson continued her hot streak at the plate with an RBI single to plate Lee.

In the third inning, pinch hitter Quincee Lilio came through with a bases-clearing triple after hits from freshman Avery Hodge and Torres and a walk to senior Grace Green to make it 10-0, OU.

LMU (5-10) got a run back at the top of the fifth with an RBI groundout before redshirt senior Alex Storako entered in a bases-loaded jam and retired the side with a pair of strikeouts.

Freshman Kierston Deal earned her second win of the season, pitching four innings, striking out three and surrendering one run on four hits and two walks.

Brito and Lee each went 2-for-3, highlighted by Lee's first career triple in the second inning. Lilio paced the squad with three RBIs to Coleman and Erickson's two a piece.

The Sooners moved to 4-0 on the weekend and are outscoring opponents 36-4 in Cathedral City.

The Sooners close their time at the Nutter Classic with a highly-anticipated Sunday matinee vs. No. 1 UCLA. First pitch is set for 11:30 a.m. CT and can be seen live on FloSoftball and heard via 107.7 The Franchise in Oklahoma or nationwide on the TuneIn app.

The game will air tape delayed on Sunday night at 9 p.m. CT on MLB Network, marking the first NCAA softball game to ever air on the network.
