Oklahoma Knocks Off No. 16 South Dakota State 18-13, Earns Second Top-25 Win of Season

The Oklahoma wrestling team rolled past No. 16 South Dakota State 18-13 behind four wins over ranked opponents.

The Sooners (9-7, 2-4 Big 12) won six of the 10 bouts, including four-straight wins, to grant OU its third consecutive win over the Jackrabbits. Oklahoma claimed the lead over No. 16 South Dakota State (11-4, 5-2 Big 12) after the 141-pound bout and maintained it to win its second top-25 win of the season.

After a loss in the 125-pound bout, No. 27 Wyatt Henson responded with an 8-2 decision over Derrick Cardinal to tie the contest up 3-3. Striking first with a 2-1 lead after the first period, Henson separated from Derrick Cardinal with a four-point near fall in the second period to win the 133-pound bout.

Earning his fourth-straight win over a top-15 opponent, No. 7 Mosha Schwartz trounced No. 10 Clay Carlson 8-2 after snatching momentum early in the 141-pound battle. Schwartz scored five unanswered and only surrendered two points via escape.

Jacob Butler opened the 157-pound clash with a four-point near fall over Caleb Gross at the end of the first period to clinch the 9-2 victory and bid the Sooners a 9-6 advantage going into intermission.

At 165 pounds, No. 16 Gerrit Nijenhuis warded off No. 14 Tanner Cook 8-5 with a winning takedown and riding time point bidding him the top-20 win.Ā

Next at 174 pounds, No. 23 Tate Picklo overcame an early 3-1 deficit to upset No. 13 Cade DeVos 8-5. Picklo's win over DeVos marks his third top-25 win of the season.

Capping off OU's 4-0 run, Keegan Moore topped No. 17 Cade King via a 10-6 decision victory. Moore's win at 184 pounds pushed the Sooners ahead 18-6 with two bouts left.

No. 19 Joey Prata dropped the first match of the day to No. 25 Tanner Jordan 4-2 in SV-1 at 125 pounds. At 149 pounds, John Wiley fell just short to Alek Martin 3-2. In the 197-pound bout, Carson Berryhill fell to No. 9 Tanner Sloan 13-4. At 285 pounds, No. 14 Josh Heindselman lost to No. 12 A.J. Nevills 3-1 in SV-1.

Oklahoma will finish the regular season against No. 7 Oklahoma State at 7 p.m. CT on Thursday, Feb. 16. The second round of Bedlam will be televised on ESPN+.
