Sooners and Tennessee Meet in Top-25 Battle

November 24, 2023 | Women's Basketball

FORT MYERS, Fla.  No. 22 Oklahoma will look to rebound from Thursday's loss when it takes on No. 19 Tennessee in the final game of the Fort Myers Women's Tip-Off on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. CT.

The Sooners (5-1) and Lady Vols (3-2) meet for the first time in over a decade as the two women's basketball titans revive a rivalry that saw the two sides meet a handful of times from 2004-2013.

Thursday's game will be streamed on the Women's Sports Network, which can be found for free on Roku, FuboTV, XUMO, Freevee, Tubi, Vizio and more. Kylen Mills and Michelle Griffin-Wenzel have the game on WSN while Brian Brinkley calls the action on the Sooner Radio Network.

QUICK HITTERS

  • OU's 2023-24 season marks the 50th in program history as Oklahoma launched its women's basketball program in the 1974-75 year. Since its inception, Oklahoma has won a total of 12 conference championships and appeared in three Final Fours. The Sooners' 23 appearances in the NCAA Tournament are the second most in the Big 12 and 23rd most in the country.

  • The Sooners seek the second top-25 win of the season vs. the Lady Vols. OU knocked off then-No. 12 Ole Miss in Oxford, Miss., on Nov. 9.

  • A win on Saturday would move Baranczyk to 4-0 vs. SEC teams as the Oklahoma head coach as the third-year head coach has already secured wins over Mississippi State and Ole Miss (2x).

  • The Sooners rose to No. 22 in the latest AP poll after opening the season without receiving votes in the preseason poll. OU was tabbed at No. 20 in the WBCA Coaches Poll. The Sooners have appeared in 17 of the last 18 editions of the AP poll.

SERIES HISTORY

The Sooners trail the all-time series with Tennessee, 5-1, with the Lady Vols taking the last two meetings. OU's lone win vs. UT came on Feb. 2, 2009, when the No. 2 Sooners knocked off No. 12 Tennessee, 80-70, in Oklahoma City. The win denied legendary coach Pat Summitt her 1,000th win and Courtney Paris' record-setting streak of 112 double-doubles came to an end in the win.

LAST TIME OUT

Oklahoma nearly erased the double-digit deficit once but couldn't complete the comeback in the second half as Princeton knocked off the No. 22-ranked Sooners, 77-63, at the Fort Myers Women's Tip-Off on Thursday. The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for Oklahoma (5-1) as the Tigers upended the Sooners' perfect start. Aubrey Joens finished with a team-high 13 points, but OU shot just 34.8% on the day against Princeton (4-1), who entered the week receiving votes in the AP Poll.

UP NEXT

The Sooners return to Lloyd Noble Center on Dec. 1 for a matchup with Grambling State at 6 p.m. The Sooners are undefeated (3-0) in Norman this season.
