NORMAN – No. 25/21 Oklahoma improved to 4-0 for the first time under head coach
Jennie Baranczyk on Wednesday, following a 92-46 win over Alabama State at Lloyd Noble Center in Norman.
Skylar Vann scored her 1,000th career point en route to a team-high 16-point, nine-rebound performance. Over 8,900 kids powered the Sooners (4-0, 0-0 Big 12) to victory as the program celebrated the largest Field Trip Day since 2018.
"Another day of a lot of balance for us today," Baranczyk said after the win. "I thought we shared the ball really well, and we would've had a lot more assists if we had just shot better. We rebounded the ball well and overall, I'm proud of what we did today."
After the teams went back and forth for the first few minutes, Oklahoma pulled away from Alabama State (0-4, 0-0 SWAC) as an 18-0 run put OU up 29-10 after the first quarter. A 16-12 advantage in the second quarter gave OU its second halftime lead of the season. The Sooners put the game away in the third quarter when they outscored the Lady Hornets by 13 points to go up 36 entering the final quarter. OU poured it on more in the final frame to secure the 92-46 victory.
Vann hit a pair of free throws with 4:22 left in the second quarter to become the 39th Sooner to eclipse 1,000 career points. The back-to-back Big 12 6th Player of the Year finished with 16 points on 6-of-14 shooting, grabbed nine rebounds and tallied three steals.
Sahara Williams notched a career-high with 14 points, adding seven rebounds and two steals in the win.
Reyna Scott made seven of her eight free throws to tally 13 points, five boards, three assists and three steals.
Aubrey Joens added double figures for the third time in three games with 11 points powered by three 3-pointers.
The Sooners' 20 steals were the most in regulation for a Baranczyk OU team and were Oklahoma's most since it posted 27 in a win over Portland State on Dec. 21, 2016. OU held Alabama State to just 33% shooting, which led to 46 points, the second-lowest opponent point total under Baranczyk. Offensively, Oklahoma shot 47% and dished out 23 assists, collecting 18 offensive rebounds and 54 total boards.
The crowd of 8,939 was Oklahoma's third largest since Baranczyk became head coach, and that crowd helped lead OU to its 450th win at Lloyd Noble Center. The Sooners have welcomed over 13,000 people to Lloyd Noble Center in three home games, the second-largest three-game attendance number to open a season in the last decade.
"I want to talk about what an incredible atmosphere that was," Baranczyk said. "I thought that the kids here were incredible for our women today and I just want to thank them, their schools and all our staff who helped make today possible."
The Sooners, who rose into the AP Top 25 on Monday, will look to notch their second road win of the season on Sunday when they take on Virginia (2-0, 0-0 ACC) in Charlottesville at 1 p.m. CT.
