Stoops Named Burlsworth Trophy Finalist

November 14, 2023 | Football

NORMAN — Oklahoma wide receiver Drake Stoops has been named one of three finalists for the Burlsworth Trophy, which is awarded to the most outstanding football player in America who began his career as a walk-on, the Brandon Burlsworth Foundation announced Tuesday.

Stoops is joined on the list of finalists by James Madison nose guard James Carpenter and Missouri running back Cody Schrader.

Stoops leads the Big 12 with his 62 receptions and nine receiving touchdowns this season, and has registered 692 receiving yards, all of which are career highs. He ranks 13th nationally in receiving touchdowns, and fifth in the Big 12 and 52nd nationally in receiving yards and receiving yards per game (69.2).

The sixth-year Sooner, who is from Norman, is one of OU's most reliable pass catchers. He has notched multiple receptions in every game this season, at least four catches in nine contests and six or more catches five times. He set career highs with 12 receptions and 134 yards on Nov. 4 at Oklahoma State and followed by establishing new career highs of 164 receiving yards and three touchdowns on 10 catches against West Virginia on Saturday. Included was a 60-yard reception that stands as OU's longest touchdown play through the air this season.

Stoops' 22 receptions and four receiving touchdowns over the last two weeks are tied for the most nationally, and his 298 receiving yards in the same stretch are the sixth most nationally. His 164 yards against WVU were the most by a Sooner in a game since CeeDee Lamb in 2019.

Stoops has compiled 142 receptions, 1,606 yards and 16 touchdowns in his career. He is a four-time Academic All-Big 12 First Team selection and was a member of the Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team in 2018.

The Burlsworth Trophy finalists will be honored and the winner of the 2023 Burlsworth Trophy will be announced Dec. 4 at 7 p.m. at Crystal Bridges Museum in Bentonville, Ark.

Former Sooner quarterback Baker Mayfield won the Burlsworth Trophy in 2015 and '16.

No. 14/13 Oklahoma plays its first-ever game in the state of Utah when it meets BYU (5-5, 2-5 Big 12) on Saturday, Nov. 18, at LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m. CT/10 a.m. MT and the game will be televised by ESPN.
