NORMAN — Oklahoma wide receiver
Nic Anderson and defensive back
Peyton Bowen are among 14 semifinalists for the 2023 Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Award, the Maxwell Football Club announced Wednesday.
Oklahoma is the only program with two semifinalists for the award, which was first presented in 2018 and is given each year to the outstanding freshman player in college football.
Anderson, a redshirt freshman from Katy, Texas, has registered 17 receptions for 405 yards and eight touchdowns. He leads the Big 12 in touchdown receptions and ranks third nationally with his 23.8 yards per catch. He has the nation's highest TD reception rate this season (47%, minimum five TD catches) and caught a touchdown pass in five straight games between Sept. 16 and Oct. 21. Anderson has recorded at least 100 receiving yards twice this season (120 and three TDs at Tulsa on Sept. 16 and 105 yards and two TDs vs. UCF on Oct. 21). Against Tulsa, he became the first OU freshman with three touchdown receptions in a single game and only the second Sooner to score three touchdowns on exactly three receptions.
Bowen, a true freshman from Corinth, Texas, has played in all eight games and made one start this season. The midseason true freshman All-American (by On3) has registered 25 total tackles, one sack, a team-high four pass breakups and one forced fumble, and is one of just two players nationally with two blocked punts on the year. He notched a season-high five tackles twice (at Cincinnati and against Texas) and despite seeing limited action against UCF due to an injury, recorded a key fourth-quarter sack in the game. His blocked punt against SMU resulted in a touchdown on OU's ensuing possession, and his blocked punt against Iowa State resulted in a safety.
Finalists for the sixth annual Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Award will be announced Nov. 29 and the award winner will be announced Dec. 27.
No. 10/11 Oklahoma plays at Oklahoma State Saturday at Boone Pickens Stadium in Stillwater, Okla. Kickoff for Bedlam is set for 2:30 p.m. and the game will be televised by ABC.
