NORMAN – University of Oklahoma head women's basketball coach
Jennie Baranczyk announced Friday the hiring of

Smith, a 38-year coaching veteran with experience at the professional, collegiate and prep levels, joins the Sooners after spending the past two seasons providing statistical analytics support to the women's basketball teams at Oklahoma, Arizona, Iowa and South Carolina.
"We're thrilled to add Coach Smith to our staff," Baranczyk said. "He brings nearly 40 years of basketball experience and a wealth of knowledge in the basketball analytics space to our program. He worked last year as a consultant for our program and helped elevate our program. We know that he will play an instrumental role in our success this season."
Smith, who was recently inducted into the Michigan Upper Peninsula Sports Hall of Fame, spent 27 years as a collegiate basketball coach, including 19 as a men's head coach. He amassed over 300 victories as a head coach and over 100 wins as an assistant in his career, winning a combined 10 championships at various stops.
Most recently at the collegiate level, Smith was the men's head coach at Finlandia (2011-14) and was a women's basketball assistant coach at Michigan State during the 2010-11 season. He also served as head coach at Lake Superior State (1991-97), Grand Valley State (1997-2004) and Alma College (2007-10). A 1984 graduate of Michigan State, Smith got his start in collegiate coaching as an assistant coach at Ferris State University during the 1987-88 season, before moving to Lake Superior State as an assistant in 1988 until he was promoted to head coach in 1991.
Smith has worked alongside several high-level coaching staffs in recruiting and analytics over the last decade, and has helped develop multiple prospects that played at the Divison I level.
Smith completes a coaching staff comprised of Baranczyk and assistant coaches
