NORMAN – The Oklahoma volleyball team dropped a three-set match to Kansas State, 25-23, 25-18, 25-15 Friday night inside McCasland Field House.
Alexis Shelton recorded 14 kills on a .462 clip to lead the Sooners. Taylor Preston added nine and Lydia Burts chipped in seven. Kelsey Carrington added six with no errors to hit .545 for the night.
Payton Chamberlain picked up 31 assists and needs just 32 more to hit 2,000 in her career. Defensively, the Sooners recorded 6.5 blocks with Shelton leading the way with three. Callie Kemohah notched seven digs and Chamberlain added five.
OU trailed 5-1 early in the first before tying the match at 6-6. At the media timeout, OU led 15-13 thanks to Preston's third kill of the match. OU extended its lead to 18-14 but K-State made it a one-point game at 19-18. K-State used a 3-0 run to take the lead and OU staved off set point at 24-22, but dropped the set 25-23.
With the teams trading points, Preston got the solo block to tie the second set at 12-12. Neither team established more than a one-point lead until the Wildcats took a 17-14 lead. K-State used a 7-4 run to take the set 25-18.
K-State took an early 9-1 lead in the third set. The Sooners worked to close the gap and a kill from Shelton brought the Sooners within five at 14-9. The Wildcats used a late run to take the set 25-15.
The Sooners will host Tulsa for a midweek non-conference matchup on Tuesday, Oct. 24, at 6 p.m. inside McCasland Field House. Fans are encouraged to wear pink as the match will serve as the breast cancer awareness game.
