John Spikerman were selected to the Preseason All-Big 12 baseball team, the conference office announced Wednesday. The team was selected in a vote by the league's head coaches, who could not vote for their own players.
Nicklaus, a sophomore second baseman from Overland Park, Kan., slugged 11 home runs and 11 doubles while batting .288 last season. He drove in 36 runs, scored 48 runs, walked 34 times and stole six bases. Nicklaus, who entered the lineup during the second weekend of the season and started 56 games, set an OU freshman record for walks and tied for second among OU freshmen in home runs and runs scored. He was named to the Big 12 All-Freshman Team.
Spikerman, a sophomore from Montgomery, Texas, batted .317 and hit eight doubles, a triple, two home runs, scored 30 runs, drove in 15 runs, and stole 12 bases in only 35 games last season. He entered the lineup on a regular basis in mid-April and made 30 starts (27 in right field), helping spur the Sooners on a run to the College World Series finals. He was named to the NCAA Gainesville Regional All-Tournament Team and ended the season on a 23-game reached base streak.
The Sooners open the 2023 season at home Feb. 17-19 with a three-game series against California Baptist, followed by a single game against Air Force on Monday, Feb. 20 at L. Dale Mitchell Park.
