NORMAN – One of the top high school players in the country, future Oklahoma Sooner Sahara Williams was named a McDonald's All-American, it was revealed on Tuesday afternoon. She will join 23 of the nation's top prep players in the marquee game, slated for March 28, 2023, at Toyota Center in Houston, Texas, and will be broadcast on ESPN.
Williams joins current Sooners Madi Williams and Payton Verhulst as recent McDonald's All-Americans. She will be the ninth Oklahoma women's basketball player to play in the famous all-star game.
Williams, a five-star prospect out of Iowa, is ranked as ESPN's No. 23 player in the 2023 class. The Waterloo, Iowa, 5-foot-10-inch prospect is the No. 5 guard in the country per ESPN and is averaging 20.5 points, 10.0 rebounds, 4.9 assists and 3.6 steals per game for West Waterloo High School as a senior. A 2022 USA Basketball 3x3 18U gold medalist, Williams is a three-time All-State honoree, including first-team selections in each of the past two seasons. At the 2022 3x3 U18 world championship, Williams dominated on both sides of the ball to guide Team USA to a perfect 7-0 record and a 21-11 win over Germany in the gold-medal match. A three-time first-team All-Metro selection and first-team All-Mississippi Valley honoree, Williams was the MVC Player of the Year in 2022. She chose Oklahoma over several Power Five schools, including Iowa, Iowa State and USC.
The future Sooner joins the likes of Payton Verhulst, Madi Williams, Nancy Mulkey, Amanda Thompson, Abi Olajuwon, Courtney Paris, Ashley Paris and Aaryn Ellenberg as Sooner prep All-Americans. Courtney Paris was the MVP of the 2005 contest.
Williams' selection makes Oklahoma one of three Big 12 schools to land a 2023 All-American, joining Iowa State and Texas, who both placed one signee on the team.
Williams will join Oklahoma's roster for the 2023-24 campaign alongside fellow member of the 2023 class, Landry Allen, who was a McDonald's All-America Game nominee. In head coach Jennie Baranczyk's first two full recruiting classes, five of her six signees were nominated for McDonald's All-America status.
