Sooners Host No. 21/22 Baylor on Saturday

NORMAN – Oklahoma hosts No. 21/22 Baylor on Saturday, Jan. 21 at 3 p.m. 

Saturday's game against the Bears will be broadcast on ESPN2 with Mark Neely and Jay Williams on the call. Fans may also listen on the Sooner Sports Radio Network  (KRXO 107.7 FM The Franchise in Oklahoma City; KTBZ 1430 AM in Tulsa; Varsity Radio App) with Toby Rowland and Kevin Henry announcing.

In the Sooners' last outing, Grant Sherfield scored a team-high 15 points and dished out four assists. Jacob Groves added 10 points and Milos Uzan and Jalen Hill each tallied eight. Tanner Groves wrangled a team-high 11 rebounds. Sherfield has recorded double-digit points in 17 contests this season and has eight 20-plus point games.

WHITEOUT & TICKET PROMOTION

Fans that attend Saturday's doubleheader are encouraged to wear white. The Oklahoma women's basketball team hosts Oklahoma State at 6 p.m. 

Four tickets can be purchased for $40 for the general public here and will get fans into both games of the doubleheader. University of Oklahoma students receive free admission. 

SCOUTING THE BEARS

Scott Drew is in his 20th season at Baylor and has compiled a 410-227 record. Drew has led the Bears to a 13-5 overall record and 3-3 mark in Big 12 play. After opening conference play with three losses, Baylor has beat West Virginia, Oklahoma State and Texas Tech. BU earned the 81-74 victory against the Red Raiders in their last outing on Tuesday, Jan. 17.

Keyonte George leads a trio of double-digit scorers and averages a team-high 17.7 points and adds 4.8 rebounds and 3.4 assists per outing. Adam Flagler adds 16.0 points and a team-high 5.3 assists per contest. LJ Cyrer averages 15.2 points and 2.1 assists per game and Jalen Bridges pulls down a team-high 5.3 boards to go along with 9.4 points. George, Jalen Bridges and Flo Thamba have started all 18 BU games.

Baylor is ranked in the top 50 in 10 NCAA DI categories. BU is ninth in free throws made (17.4), 18th in free throw attempts per game (23.6), 20th in 3-pointers per game (9.6), 21st in 3-point attempts per game (26.4), 24th in assists per game (16.5), 26th in scoring offense (80.6), 37th in scoring margin (10.8), 42nd in effective field goal percentage (54.4%), 48th in rebound margin (5.2) and 48th in offensive rebounds per game (12.2).

LAST MEETING: BAYLOR

After dropping the two 2022 regular season meetings against Baylor, Oklahoma earned the 72-67 victory in the Big 12 Championship quarterfinals at T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Mo.

Jacob Groves led the way with 15 points and nine rebounds. Umoja Gibson added 14 points and Marvin Johnson pitched in 12. Jordan Goldwire and Jalen Hill added 10 points apiece.

Oklahoma shot 63.0% (17-27) in the second half after it entered the break down six. J. Groves scored 12 points in the second frame and wrangled six rebounds. Groves put the Sooners up eight after he hit a pair of free throws with 33 seconds left. Baylor chipped into the OU lead and narrowed the gap to five. Johnson sank two from the charity stripe to put OU up seven with three seconds. BU gained back two on a dunk by Matthew Mayer as time expired.

NET/SCHEDULE

The Sooners are 57th in the NET (1/20) and Baylor is 16th. Of Oklahoma's 13 remaining contests, the Sooners have 11 quad one games and two quad two games. All 10 Big 12 teams are ranked in the top 75 and the conference has an average NET ranking of 27.8.

Oklahoma has the toughest remaining schedule based on future opposition winning percentage (175-53, 76.7%). The first eight teams are from the Big 12 and all 10 teams are in the top 13.

Grant Sherfield is 29th in free throw percentage (88.2%), Tanner Groves is 35th in defensive rebounds per game (6.5) and Jalen Hill is 55th in free throw percentage (86.3%). Sherfield is first in the Big 12 in free throw percentage, third in minutes per game (33:46), third in field goal attempts (236), fourth in points (315), fourth in field goals (104) and fifth in points per game (17.5). Groves is third in defensive rebounds per game (6.5) and rebounds (132). Hill is fourth in free throw percentage (86.3%).

Sherfield is 22nd among active NCAA Division I career leaders in assist average (4.77), 23rd in scoring average (15.4), 25th in assist to turnover ratio (1.88), 27th in assists (487) and 59th in total points (1,575). The Fort Worth, Texas product is one of 29 DI men's basketball players with 1,500 career points and 300 assists. Groves is 85th in career rebounds (674).
