January 12, 2023 | Men's Gymnastics
NORMAN — Seven current Oklahoma men's gymnasts are set to compete Friday at the Houston National Invitational, a qualifying meet for the 2023 USA Gymnastics Winter Cup in February.
Representing the Sooners in Houston will be super seniors Spencer Goodell, Vitaliy Guimaraes and Morgan Seyler, senior Jack Freeman, juniors Zach Nunez and Dan Simmons and freshman Ignacio Yockers. Also competing at the meet will be 2019 OU alumnus and 2020 Tokyo Olympian Yul Moldauer. Accompanying the squad will be head coach Mark Williams and assistant coaches Valeriy Goncharov and Josh Yee.
The meet will begin at 6 p.m. CT Friday evening and will feature an Open Team Cup where the seven current Sooners will comprise a team that will compete against other club gym programs from across the country.
Six of the seven Sooners will be looking to secure their spot at Winter Cup in February, a national meet that serves as part of the selection process for the 2023 Men's National Team. Simmons has already prequalified to Winter Cup through his performance at the 2022 U.S. Championships this past summer.
Live scoring from the event can be found at MeetScoresOnline. For more information and tickets to the meet, visit HNImeet.org.
For fans in the area, the Sooners will hold an autograph session at the convention center on Saturday morning from 8-10 a.m. CT.
The Sooners begin their NCAA season next Saturday, Jan. 21, in Colorado Springs, Colo., at the annual Rocky Mountain Open on the campus of the U.S. Air Force Academy. The 2023 Sooners return eight All-Americans from a national runner-up season in 2022.
