NORMAN — Oklahoma quarterback Dillon Gabriel has been named Big 12 Co-Newcomer of the Week after passing for 296 yards and three touchdowns in the Sooners' 33-3 win over Kent State on Saturday, the league office announced Monday.
Gabriel completed 75% of his pass attempts (21 of 28) and compiled a 199.2 pass efficiency rating against Kent State. His touchdown passes covered 36, 18 and 58 yards. A redshirt junior in his first year at Oklahoma, Gabriel has thrown at least one TD pass in all 28 of his career games and at least two TD passes in 22 contests.
Through two games, Gabriel has completed 36 of 51 passes (70.6%) for 529 yards and five touchdowns and has yet to commit a turnover this season. The Mililani, Hawaii, product ranks among the top quarterbacks nationally in passing efficiency rating (190.1; eighth), yards per pass attempt (10.37; ninth), yards per pass completion (14.7; 19th), completion percentage (22nd), passing touchdowns (22nd), passing yards per game (264.5; 31st) and total offense (269.5 yards per game; 38th).
This is the first Big 12 weekly honor for Gabriel and the first for an OU player this season.
No. 6/6 Oklahoma (2-0, 0-0 Big 12) will face Nebraska (1-2, 0-1 Big Ten) at 11 a.m. CT Saturday at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln, Neb. The game will be televised by FOX.
