Sooners Dominant in Exhibition Win Over Central Arkansas

August 19, 2022 | Volleyball

FORT SMITH, Ark. – Oklahoma volleyball closed out the preseason with a 4-1 exhibition victory against Central Arkansas Friday evening at Southside High School in Fort Smith.

"Overall, we are very pleased as a staff with how far this team has come in a short two weeks of practice," head coach Lindsey Gray-Walton said. "The success this team can have lies in their ability to stay strong as a unit. Our depth is our biggest asset, and we will need everyone this season in order to reach the goals we have set."

Sophomore Megan Wilson had an exceptional night with 15 kills on 28 total attacks. Freshman duo Morgan Perkins and Taylor Preston joined Wilson in double figures with 10 kills. Perkins also had no errors for a .769 hitting percentage and posted four blocks. Graduate student Savannah Davison turned in nine kills on 21 total attacks.

The Sooners got out to a strong start to sweep the first three sets, 3-0. In the first set, OU led Central Arkansas 18-14 at the first timeout and carried the momentum into a 25-22 set win.

During the second set, the Bears took a 16-11 lead, but the Sooners came back strong to win a closely contested set, 25-23. OU kept the momentum going with a 19-8 run at a timeout in the third set and eventually won 25-13.

The Sooners swept the Bears 3-0 but decided to play out all five sets during exhibition play.

"We have an ability to set a lot of people, but the decision making of our setters getting the right people in position to score in certain times was crucial to us closing out sets how we wanted to," Gray-Walton noted.

OU won a tightly contested fourth set 25-23, before Central Arkansas won its only set of the night with a 15-13 victory in the fifth.

"This week we will spend a lot of time on our serve, pass and defense," Gray-Walton said. "This will be a pillar to the program's success and crucial to jump starting the season's home opener next weekend against Gonzaga."

NEXT SERVE

The Sooners open their 2022 campaign next week at home with the OU Invitational inside McCasland Field House, and will host Gonzaga on Friday, Aug. 26, Big Ten foe Iowa on Saturday, Aug. 27, and conclude the weekend with FIU on Sunday, Aug. 28.
