Sooners Advance To First Round of 16

NORMAN — The No. 2 Oklahoma women's tennis team secured their first program trip to the Round of 16 in the NCAA Tournament, taking No. 17 Arizona State down to the wire with a 4-3 victory.

"It means a lot, not just for me, but for these young women," said head coach Audra Cohen. "They put in so much work, passion and energy every day and that's what it's all about. For me, it's special, but we do our job so that they can have this opportunity."

Despite taking early leads on each court, the Sooners dropped the doubles point to open the match. Layne Sleeth and Alexandra Pisareva were first to fall, dropping court two 6-3 against Giulia Morlet and Sedona Gallagher. Arizona State's Cali Jankowski and Marianna Argyrokastriti clinched the opening point with their 6-4 win at the No. 3 spot over Dana Guzman and Emma Staker.

When play was halted, No. 10 Ivana and Carmen Corley led No. 28 Patricija Spaka and Domenika Turkovic 6-5 at the top court.

The Sundevils claimed the first court in singles. Cali Jankowski defeated OU's Guzman on court four, 6-3, 6-3.

Oklahoma answered with No. 53 Carmen Corley taking down No. 102 Domenika Turkovic 6-3, 7-5 on court two. Freshman Staker tied the match 2-2 with her 6-4, 6-2 win at the No. 6 spot over Marianna Margyrokastriti. To take the lead, No. 97 Ivana Corley came back from a 4-1 set two deficit to claim court three 6-4, 7-6 (7-2) against Sedona Gallagher.

At the No. 5 spot, ASU's Patricija Spaka tied the match 3-3 against Pisareva 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).

With a trip to the Round of 16 on the line, it all came down to the top court. After an intense back-and-forth battle, No. 10 Sleeth secured the Sooner victory with a 6-4, 6-3 win over No. 79 Giulia Morlet.

"They came out with their heart and earned it." Cohen said.

The Sooners will face No. 15 Stanford in the Round of 16 next weekend at the Headington Family Tennis Center. Details for the match will be announced at a later time. The full bracket can be found here.
