Bennett Named Big 12 Pitcher of the Week

May 02, 2022 | Baseball

NORMAN – Jake Bennett notched 11 strikeouts over 7.0 shutout innings in Oklahoma's 14-2 series-opening win over Kansas State, and was named Big 12 Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced Monday.

Bennett, a Bixby, Okla., product, allowed only two hits and no walks during his outing, holding down a Wildcats offense that entered the weekend averaging more than 6.5 runs and almost 10 hits per game. His 11 strikeouts matched a career high and tied for most among Big 12 starting pitchers last week.

The third-year sophomore has registered double-digit strikeouts three times this season. He also had 11 strikeouts on Feb. 25 against Northwestern State and 10 punch outs on March 18 against New Orleans. Bennett has lasted at least 6.0 innings in seven of his 11 starts and allowed three or fewer runs in eight starts this year. He is 4-2 with a 3.29 ERA and has totaled 75 strikeouts in 65.2 innings this season.

This Bennett's first Big 12 weekly award, and Oklahoma's fourth of the season. Chazz Martinez was named Big 12 Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 28, David Sandlin was named Newcomer of the Week on March 14 and Blake Robertson was Named Newcomer of the Week on April 25.

The Sooners (27-15) travel to Dallas on Tuesday for a midweek contest against Dallas Baptist (26-17). Game time is set for 6:30 p.m.
