LUBBOCK, Texas – The Oklahoma baseball team blasted six home runs and took advantage of six stolen bases to defeat No. 5 Texas Tech 13-8 Thursday evening in the series opener at Rip Griffin Park.
Freshman John Spikerman led off the game with his first career home run and the Sooners (32-19, 14-8 Big 12) overcame an early 4-1 deficit by scoring 12 consecutive runs before Tech answered in the ninth inning. OU took the lead on a two-run home run by Peyton Graham in the fifth and hit three homers in a four-run sixth inning. Jackson Nicklaus homered in the third and Tanner Tredaway, Jimmy Crooks and Brett Squires homered in the sixth.
The Red Raiders (35-17, 14-8 Big 12) took the early lead with three runs in the first inning and one in the second. Jake Bennett (6-3) retired 13 of the next 14 batters, limiting Tech to an infield single in the fourth inning. The Raiders scored four runs in the ninth to reach the final margin. OU handed TTU starter Andrew Morris (7-1) his first loss of the season.
Bennett went 6.0 innings, struck out four and walked one. Carson Atwood got two outs in the seventh inning with two runners on base before turning it over to Trevin Michael. With the bases loaded and two outs, Tredaway made a jumping catch at the top of the wall in deep left center field to end the frame.
"I thought Bennett went out and tried to win the game early, but he got really good at the end," Oklahoma head coach Skip Johnson said. "Trevin did great. The offense was really, really good. We got some big hits when we needed them."
Nicklaus hit his eighth home run of the season to lead off the third inning. Kendall Pettis followed with a single, stole his way to third base and scored on a groundout by Spikerman.
Oklahoma's third leadoff homer of the game came in the sixth inning when Tredaway deposited his sixth of the year over the left center field wall. Crooks went back-to-back, putting his fourth homer of the season in the OU bullpen in left. After a walk to Wallace Clark, Squires wrapped his sixth of the season just inside the left field foul pole to make it a 9-4 lead.
Tredaway went 3 for 5 and stole three bases in the game, scoring after one steal in the seventh inning. He took off for second on a pickoff attempt and raced all the way home when the throw from first base caromed into center field to make the score 10-4. This was his third game of the season with three stolen bases.
Tredaway's other two steals came in the ninth inning following a leadoff single. He scored on a base hit to third base by Squires. Nicklaus followed with his third hit of the night, and Pettis drove home both runners with a single to make the lead 13-4.
Jace Jung doubled in Texas Tech's first run and Ty Coleman hit a two-run homer. In the second inning, Cole Stilwell singled in a run to make it 4-1. Easton Murrell hit a leadoff home run in the bottom of the ninth, and singles by Coleman and Owen Washburn and a groundout by Hudson White made the score 13-8.
The Sooners hit six home runs in a game for the first time since May 2, 2010, against Kansas State.
Oklahoma and Texas Tech continue the series at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
