Sooners Clinch Series with Another Shutout

April 09, 2022 | Softball

LUBBOCK, Texas — No. 1 Oklahoma rolled to an 11-0 win in five innings on Saturday in Lubbock, clinching the series over the Red Raiders in run-rule fashion.

The Sooners (35-0, 5-0) won their 64th Big 12 game of their last 65 and are undefeated in their last 62 conference series (58-0-4).

The day was highlighted by a one-hit gem in the circle from Hope Trautwein and four home runs from the offense.

Following a quiet first inning, senior Grace Lyons woke the bats up in the second with a solo shot to right center, her 16th homer of the season and seventh in the last six games.

After Trautwein stranded a pair in the second, the third inning saw junior catcher Kinzie Hansen hit her fifth homer of the season and first since Feb. 26 vs. Tennessee. Also in the third, junior Rylie Boone laced a two-out RBI single to center to score Sophomore Jayda Coleman

OU plated five runs on four hits in the fourth. Sophomore Tiare Jennings blasted her 15th home run of the season and second in as many days vs. the Red Raiders (19-18, 2-6 Big 12) on a two-run shot to left. Also in the frame, Coleman ripped a bases-clearing double to left center to score a trio of Sooners.

In the bottom of the fourth, a well-executed 4-6-3 double play by Jennings, Lyons and first baseman Taylon Snow ended any threat the Red Raiders posed.

OU added three more insurance runs in the fifth off the bat of senior Grace Green. Green launched her third home run of the season to left field, with all three blasts coming as a pinch-hitter.

Boone finished the game with an exclamation point, making a diving grab in foul territory down the right field line to give OU its 29th run-rule win of the season.

Trautwein improved her NCAA-best ERA to 0.12 with her 10th win of the season in the circle, going the distance for her third shutout. She struck out seven and allowed just one hit and four walks to Tech.

Eight Sooners registered a hit in the game with six bringing in a run. Boone led in hits with a 2-for-3, one RBI performance while Green and Coleman each brought in three runs.

Oklahoma has won 37 straight dating back to Game Two of the Women's College World Series Championship Series and is 10 wins away from tying the all-time Division I record (47; Arizona, 1996-97). Their 35-0 start to the season is the best in school history and tied for the longest win streak to open a season in Division I history.

The Sooners are outscoring the Red Raiders 22-0 in the first two games of the series and outhitting Tech 18-3 to go with 10 home runs.

The finale is scheduled for noon CT on Sunday and can be seen on ESPN+ and heard via 107.7 The Franchise in Oklahoma and nationwide on The Varsity app.
