OU Homers Six Times, Beats Tech in Game One
April 08, 2022 | Softball
LUBBOCK, Texas — No. 1 Oklahoma blasted past Texas Tech in game one of the conference series on Friday, winning 11-0 in five innings for their 28th run-rule victory of the season. With the win, OU set the program record for best start to a season in program history at 34-0.
The OU bats were on fire, smashing six home runs on the day including three from senior Jocelyn Alo. Joining with two of her own was Grace Lyons, while Tiare Jennings hit the other OU homer. Six home runs matched OU's single-game high this season, the third time that the Sooners have gone yard a half dozen times.
Freshman Jordy Bahl tossed a two-hit shutout, collecting five strikeouts in the complete-game performance for her 15th win of the season.
The Sooners scored in each of the five innings they went to the plate. In the first, sophomore Jayda Coleman drew a bases-loaded walk to bring in Alo after Alo got aboard on a walk of her own.
The homer party got started in the second with Alo hitting her first of the game on a sky-high, two-run shot to center field.
In the third, Lyons hit her first of the game on a solo shot to left field.
The fourth inning saw Alo hit her second blast of the day on a ball that exited the field in a hurry. The ball went over the left field foul pole and was initially ruled foul but after an umpire discussion, the hit was ruled a round-tripper.
In the fifth, OU sent three over the fence, marking the second time this season the Sooners have hit three or more in one inning. It was the 19th time Oklahoma has hit two-plus in one frame.
Lyons began the half inning with her second solo shot of the game, the second time this season the shortstop has hit two-plus in a contest.
After an RBI single from sophomore Alyssa Brito, sophomore Tiare Jennings hit her 14th homer of the year on a three-run blast to left center.
Alo concluded the OU scoring in the fifth with the Sooners' sixth home run of the game and her third, sending another solo shot to left.
It was Alo's first career game with three home runs and her 12th multi-HR game. The Hawaii native has 19 homers on the season and 107 in her career.
Bahl allowed just two hits and one walk to the Red Raiders (19-17, 2-5 Big 12) en route to her fourth shutout of the season.
The teams meet for game two of the series on Saturday at 2 p.m. CT. The game can be seen via ESPN+ and heard on the radio on 107.7 The Franchise in Oklahoma and nationwide on The Varsity app.
