LUBBOCK, Texas – Oklahoma women's golf dropped a pair of matches against Texas Tech and Tulsa during the first day of the Red Raider Match Play at Rawls Course Sunday.
Mikhaela Fortuna finished with a pair of victories, while
Hannah Screen and
Maria Fernanda Martinez each recorded a win.
"Mikheala played solid all day and in match play," said Oklahoma head coach
Veronique Drouin-Luttrell. "It's very important to play one hole at a time and she did a great job staying in the present. She battled every hole and I'm proud of her."
The Sooners opened the day with a battle against host Texas Tech.
OU dropped a pair of matches early before Screen and Fortuna evened the tally.
Screen jumped out to an early 4-hole advantage and netted wins on the eighth and ninth holes. She dropped back on the 11
th before regaining momentum with back-to-back wins on the 13
th and 14
th holes. She finished the round against Texas Tech's Amy Taylor 5-and-4.
Fortuna finished the front nine with a 4-hole lead and maintained her advantage through the 12th. After TTU's Chiara Horder earned a stroke back on the 13
th, Fortuna cruised to the 3-and-2 victory.
In the second match of the day, Fernanda Martinez and Fortuna earned 1-up victories.
Martinez fell behind through the first 16 holes before evening the score on the eighth hole. She earned the 1-up victory on the ninth.
Fortuna earned her second victory of the day after capturing the 1-hole advantage on the 18
th. She maintained her advantage through the entire front nine.
"Maria was able to win her afternoon match by having a strong finish and came back from behind," said Drouin-Luttrell. "Tomorrow is a new day and we must play inspired."
