Sooners 8th at Big 12 Championship

HOCKLEY, Texas ā Oklahoma women's golf concluded its opening round of the 2022 Big 12 Women's Golf Championship at The Clubs at Houston Oaks eighth after an 18-over 302.
No team finished the day under par on the par-71, 6,224-yard course. Baylor led the nine-team field and finished the first 18 4-over 288.
"Today was a tough day but all of the scores are bunched up and we have a lot of golf left to play," said Oklahoma women's golf head coach Veronique Drouin-Luttrell. "We must play one shot at a time and focus on the present."
Hannah Screen led the Sooners and is tied for 11th (2-over 73). Screen opened the day with a birdie before a rough patch brought her to two over through six. The senior buried a birdie on the par-5 eighth to move back to one over before another setback on the ninth.
The London, England product tallied a pair of birdies on the 11th and 15th holes, moving her back to even. Screen finished with two bogies in her final three holes.
Screen tied for the most birdies (four) in the first round and finished with the second-best score on par 3s (3.00).
Mikhaela Fortuna started the round with two birdies in her first five holes. She finished the front nine even and dropped to 1-over after a bogey on the 10th. Fortuna finished the opening round 3-over and tallied back-to-back pars to conclude her day.
Meagan Winans finished the first nine 5-over and responded with back-to-back birdies in her final two holes. The freshman tallied a 1-under 35 on the back nine and was the only Sooner to finish the front or back nine under par.
Maria Fernanda Martinez and Libby Winans each tied for 39th (9-over 80).
UP NEXT
The Sooners are paired with Kansas State and Kansas for the second round and tee off at 8 a.m.
