Sooners Run-Rule Mean Green
April 20, 2022 | Softball
DENTON, Texas — No. 1 Oklahoma got back in the win column with a 10-0 win in six innings over North Texas on Wednesday night.
The OU offense had 13 hits and homered four times, with Tiare Jennings hitting a pair. The Sooner pitching staff of Jordy Bahl and Hope Trautwein limited UNT (25-11, 13-5 C-USA) to just one hit. It was OU's 32nd run-rule victory of the season and 23rd shutout.
Jennings put OU (39-1, 8-1 Big 12) on the board early, blasting a solo shot in the first inning. After a quiet second inning, Jennings and senior Grace Lyons put another pair of OU runs up with an RBI single and groundout, respectively.
In the fourth, sophomore Alyssa Brito blasted her fourth home run in the last four games and her 11th of the season on a two-run shot to left center.
After Bahl retired the first 12 UNT batters of the game, the Mean Green broke up Bahl's potential perfect game in the bottom of the fifth with their only hit of the game, a double from Kailey Gamble down the right line. Bahl responded by forcing two groundouts and striking out the third.
Oklahoma broke things open in the sixth with five runs on five hits. Super senior Jana Johns led off the inning with her ninth home run of the season before a fielder's choice RBI from Jocelyn Alo brought in Rylie Boone. Jennings ripped her second home run of the game and 18th of the season deep over the center field wall on a three-run blast. It was Jennings' fifth game of the season with multiple homers.
Trautwein entered in the bottom of the sixth to finish off her former team, retiring the Mean Green in order with two by way of the K. Bahl collected her 17th win of the season in the circle, striking out six in 5.0 IP and allowing one hit and no runs or walks.
Six Sooners registered a hit in the game with four registering multiple. Five Sooners brought in at least one run with Jennings batting in five, a single-season best for the second-year second baseman.
Jennings and Jayda Coleman paced OU with 3-for-4 performances, while Boone went a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Brito finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs and runs scored.
Wednesday marked the 15th time OU has hit four or more home runs in a game and the 34th game OU has gone yard out of its 40 contests.
Oklahoma brings its home run total to 109 on the season and is outscoring opponents 378-32. The pitching staff has 344 strikeouts on the year and has allowed just 21 earned runs (0.66 ERA).
The top-ranked Sooners return to Big 12 play this weekend with a three-game set vs. Iowa State (21-21, 2-7 Big 12) at Marita Hynes Field in Norman. The first game is scheduled for Friday at 6 p.m. CT prior to 1 p.m. starts on Saturday and Sunday.
The series is sold out but a free option for fans that want to be a part of the atmosphere at Marita Hynes is the recently-announced return of Home Run Village presented by OERB, a fan fest for all ages located on the lawn directly west of the OU Softball Complex.
