Trautwein Deals, Sooners Sweep UAB

April 02, 2022 | Softball

NORMAN — No. 1 Oklahoma completed the two-game sweep of UAB on Saturday with a 2-0 win at Marita Hynes Field.

Redshirt senior Hope Trautwein threw a two-hit shutout, striking out nine and allowing one walk to the Blazers.

Sophomore Jayda Coleman and senior captain Lynnsie Elam hit back-to-back home runs in the sixth inning to give the Sooners (32-0, 3-0) their 32nd victory on the year. It was just the sixth complete game OU has played on the season, run-ruling opponents in the other 26 contests.

UAB's Sarah Cespedes and the Blazer (20-13) defense's shift kept the OU bats in check for the majority of the game, with OU registering six hits in the game, their third-lowest hit total in a game this season.

Trautwein took the win in the pitchers' duel, including a period from the third to seventh inning where the righty retired 12 straight.

In the sixth with two outs, Coleman hit her fifth home run of the season on a solo shot to left field. It marked her second consecutive game leaving the yard. Elam followed Coleman with a solo shot of her own, her seventh homer in the last eight games and 11th of the season. It was the sixth time in 2022 that Oklahoma has hit back-to-back blasts.

Trautwein finished things for the Sooners in the seventh, stranding one and securing her ninth win of the season.

Coleman and junior Rylie Boone paced the Sooners at the plate with 2-for-3 performances with Coleman and Elam each bringing in one run on their solo homers.

On the year, Oklahoma has hit 83 home runs including two or more in 23 games and three-plus 17 times.

The Sooner pitching staff holds a 0.67 ERA and has 287 strikeouts on the season, allowing just 27 runs (17 ER). The staff holds 17 shutouts.

The top-ranked Sooners return to action for a midweek matchup with Tulsa on Wednesday, April 6 at 6 p.m. CT. The game can be seen on Bally Sports Oklahoma Extra and heard via 107.7 The Franchise in Oklahoma and nationwide on The Varsity app.
