ARLINGTON, Texas –
David Sandlin struck out seven batters over 6.0 shutout innings and
Peyton Graham gave Oklahoma the lead with a two-run single in the seventh inning as the Sooners defeated No. 8 Texas 4-2 Saturday afternoon to even the Red River Rivalry series at Globe Life Field.
Sandlin turned out a tremendous effort, allowing just two hits and one walk in his outing. He and UT starter Tristan Stevens (4-2) allowed a combined six hits while dueling through six scoreless innings.
Trevin Michael (2-0) struck out six batters over the final three frames to earn the win.
Graham's single put Oklahoma (16-9, 3-2 Big 12) in front after Silas Ardoin hit a solo home run in the top of the seventh to score the first run of the game for Texas (20-9, 3-2 Big 12).
The Sooners added two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth on an error and an RBI single by
Jackson Nicklaus. The runs proved to be crucial, as Ardoin homered again with one out in the ninth inning. Michael got a strikeout for the second out of the inning with a runner on first. With the tying run on second and a full count,
Diego Muniz laid out to catch a diving line drive in left field to end the game.
"Sandlin was really good, and our offense got us ahead," Oklahoma head coach
Skip Johnson said. "We stole some bases and put some pressure on them. I thought that was really huge. It kind of settles you – your breaking ball and your fastball command gets better when your offense is playing offense. That was really big."
Cade Horton and Nicklaus hit consecutive one-out singles in the seventh inning to chase Stevens from the game. Graham ripped a two-out base hit into center field to score both runners and give Oklahoma a 2-1 lead.
Sebastian Orduno lined a single into center field with one out in the eighth inning and was replaced at first by
Kendall Pettis, who stole second. After a walk to Horton, he and Pettis executed a double steal, and the throw to third went down the left field line, allowing Pettis to score. Nicklaus followed with a base hit to center, plating Horton to make it 4-1.
Sandlin retired the first 11 batters of the game before a walk and a single in the fourth inning. He ended the frame with a fly out to Tredaway in left center, then retired the side in order in the fifth. With two runners on and one out in the sixth, he struck out two batters to subdue the threat.
"It was one of those deals where we just kept plowing away," Johnson said. "When you're in a zero-zero game like that, every pitch matters. I thought David took it one pitch at a time. He really went to the mental game to get through that, and it was really big."
Oklahoma registered seven steals in the game, including three by Graham. It was the second time this season he notched three steals in a game (also vs. Wichita State on Feb. 22).
OU's win sets up a rubber game on Sunday at Globe Life Field. First pitch is set for noon on ESPN.
