For the ninth consecutive year, the Oklahoma women's gymnastics team is headed to the NCAA Finals, behind an incredible 198.1125 in semifinal action. The mark is the highest in semifinal action by the Sooners in program history and fifth-highest at an NCAA Championship semifinal or final meet.
The Sooners have now made 10 appearances in the team finals and are the only program since 2013 to advance to every finals competition. Oklahoma will be joined by Utah (197.7125) who finished in second place. Minnesota (197.1125) finished third while Alabama came in fourth (197.1000). The final two competitors for Saturday's final will come from the second session tonight featuring Florida, Michigan, Auburn and Missouri.
"Making it to the top eight is a really big win," head coach K.J. Kindler said. "It's very hard in our sport with the parity that exists across the board. Getting here, that was tough too. Our goal today was to win the session. I know we're considered an underdog in this meet and we're okay with that position. We know that the competition is tough. It's going to be a battle all the way down to the last event on Saturday."
The Sooners tallied a 49.3500 on vault to open the meet in second, just .125 behind Utah's 49.475. Allie Stern started the rotation on a high note with a 9.9375 on a stuck Yurchenko 1.5. Jordan Bowers had a powerful 1.5 for a 9.875, followed by a strong 1.5 from Danielle Sievers for a 9.8625. Olivia Trautman notched a 9.875 of her own in the fifth spot. Audrey Davis stepped in at the last minute to take over the anchor position, earning a 9.80 on her Yurchenko full.
"I was a little shocked, but I was prepared and had stayed warm," Davis said. "I am the alternate so if anything happens, I have to be ready. I really just wanted to go out and do the best I could for my team."
OU used a big 49.575 on bars to take the lead by a slim margin of .025 after the second rotation. The mark was the third highest in an NCAA Championship meet for the Sooners. Sievers started the Sooners off with a bang, sticking her dismount for a 9.90. LeVasseur followed with incredible handstands and a stuck double layout for a 9.9375. Making her season debut on the event, Trautman stuck her double layout for a 9.8875. Ragan Smith nailed her release and showcased a strong dismount for a 9.8625. Bowers, competing in her first NCAA Championship event, was gorgeous on the bars and nailed her dismount for a 9.90 in the No. 5 spot. Davis nailed her routine and stuck her double front half dismount for a team-high 9.950.
In the third rotation, the Sooners notched a Jenna Dunn's triple series in the leadoff position was as smooth as butter as she tallied a 9.7875. Trautman wrapped up her three event night with a strong beam routine and a stuck dismount for a 9.9125. LeVasseur showed off her floaty series and a stuck gainer full dismount for a 9.900 in the No. 3 spot. Davis' leaps were impeccable, and her choreography shined as she earned a 9.8625. Carly Woodard nailed her dismount in her final NCAA Championship, earning a 9.9125 in the No. 5 spot. Smith anchored with the top score of the rotation and a 9.925.
The Sooners closed out the meet with a big 49.675 on floor to tie their highest floor score at an NCAA Championship event. Bell Johnson opened the final rotation with a strong double tuck and a 9.90. Woodard's blues-inspired routine showcased her choreography as she tallied a 9.8875. Danae Fletcher's whip to double back was strong as always as she earned a 9.9375. Sievers opening full-in and upbeat, energetic choreography was a crowd favorite as she tallied a 9.9375. Bowers showed off her fierce intensity and sky-high double pike for a 9.9625, the highest score of the opening round of competition.
Oklahoma will vie for its fifth overall NCAA title when it competes in Saturday's team finals. The meet will begin at noon CT on ABC, with individual streams of each event available in the ESPN app.
