Jennings Walks it Off for Series Sweep

March 27, 2022 | Softball

NORMAN — No. 1 Oklahoma (29-0, 3-0) swept the series over Baylor (17-13, 0-3) in dramatic fashion Sunday afternoon with a walk-off, three-run home run from sophomore Tiare Jennings. OU claimed their first Big 12 series of the season with the 3-1 win.

Redshirt senior Hope Trautwein was magnificent in the circle, striking out 13 and allowing just one unearned run on one hit and three walks. Trautwein didn't allow a Baylor ball to be put in play until the fourth inning.

Baylor's Dariana Orme threw an exceptional game against the Sooner offense, allowing just one hit through six innings until the OU bats came up clutch in the seventh with three runs on three hits. The game marked the first time since 2019 that Oklahoma failed to score a run through six innings (June 2, 2019 loss vs. Alabama, 0-1 [8]).

Baylor plated the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly in the sixth after a double and an error allowed the Bears to put two on base. Kaci West then flied out to right field allowing McKenzie Wilson to advance home. It was just the fourth game this season that the Sooners have trailed.

In clutch fashion, the Oklahoma offense responded in the seventh. Down to their last out, pinch hitter Kinzie Hansen laced a single to right field before a single to left from Mackenzie Donihoo put two runners on base to set the stage for the top of the lineup. On a 3-1 count, Jennings blasted her 12th home run of the season on a three-run shot to center field to walk off the Bears and keep OU's record perfect.

It was Jennings' second walk-off home run of the season but first go-ahead walk off. The first came on a two-run homer against then-No. 8 Arizona on Feb. 26 in Palm Springs, Calif., for a run-rule win.

Jennings finished the day 2-for-4 with three RBIs to lead the Sooners, while Hansen and Donihoo each went 1-for-1 with Donihoo drawing a pair of walks.

Trautwein tied her season best with 13 K's to collect her eighth win of the season.

Jennings paced the Sooners in the conference-opening series, going a combined 4-for-8 (.500) on the weekend with two home runs, one of which was a grand slam, and nine RBIs.

On the season, Oklahoma is outscoring the opposition 279-25 and have hit 74 home runs. The pitching staff holds a combined ERA of 0.70 to go with 264 strikeouts. Sunday's game snapped OU's streak of 12 consecutive wins by run-rule and the contest was just the fifth complete game OU has played on the season, winning by run-rule in 24 of its 29 games.

The Sooners turn around to play a midweek game on Tuesday night vs. Wichita State at Marita Hynes Field in Norman. The game is slated for a 6 p.m. CT first pitch and can be seen on Bally Sports Oklahoma and heard on the radio via The Franchise 2 (1560 AM) in Oklahoma and nationwide on the TuneIn app.
