No. 1 OU Blasts Past No. 8 Cats

March 22, 2022 | Softball

LEXINGTON, Ky. — No. 1 Oklahoma (26-0) won a top-10 battle over No. 8 Kentucky (20-6) on Tuesday night in Lexington, 9-1, in six innings. The offense was in dominant fashion once again, blasting six home runs on the night with three different Sooners hitting a pair.

Jocelyn Alo, Alyssa Brito and Lynnsie Elam all left the yard twice in front of a sold-out crowd of 2,117 at John Cropp Stadium. OU registered 11 hits on the night, their 11th performance on the year with 10-plus hits.

Freshman Jordy Bahl was a force in the circle, allowing the Wildcats just one run on five hits in a complete-game, 12-strikeout performance.

Alo and Elam opened the game up in the first two innings with solo shots before the Sooners broke it open in the third with four runs on three hits.

Elam drove in three of OU's four runs on a three-run homer in the third, her second homer of the night and fifth in her last five at-bats. Sophomore Jayda Coleman brought in OU's other run in the frame on an RBI single.

Sophomore Alyssa Brito hit a leadoff home run in the top of the fourth before Kentucky answered in the bottom half of the inning on a solo homer for their only run of the game.

Brito and Alo answered back in the sixth inning with solo blasts to put the game in run-rule territory at 9-1.

Bahl set the 'Cats down in order at the bottom of the sixth with two outs coming by way of the K to give the Sooners their 26th win of the season, including fourth top-25 and third top-10 win.

Five Sooners registered hits in the game, with all five recording two or more. Coleman led the team with a 3-for-4 performance while Elam brought in four runs on a 2-for-4 night where both hits were homers. Alo and Brito went 2-for-2 and 2-for-3, respectively, with two RBIs a piece.

It was OU's 22nd run-rule victory in 26 games and the second consecutive game the team has hit six home runs. OU has left the yard in 22 of its 25 games. Additionally, with three Sooners hitting a pair of homers Tuesday, it makes 12 times on the year a Sooner has hit two-plus roundtrippers in one game.

The top-ranked Sooners return to the field this weekend, March 25-27, at Marita Hynes Field in Norman for the conference-opening series vs. Baylor. Friday the teams match up at 6:30 p.m. CT before a 2 o'clock start on Saturday and noon finale Sunday.

The series can be seen via Bally Sports Oklahoma and heard on the radio via 107.7 The Franchise in Oklahoma and nationwide on the TuneIn app.
