Sooners Run-Rule Baylor to Open Weekend

March 25, 2022 | Softball

NORMAN — No. 1 Oklahoma (27-0, 1-0) won its 12th consecutive game by run-rule to open conference play on Friday, beating Baylor 9-1 in five innings.

The Sooners got home runs from Jocelyn Alo and Lynnsie Elam and a grand slam from Tiare Jennings. Freshman Jordy Bahl went the distance in the circle, collecting her 11th win of the season and surrendering just one run on two hits to go with eight strikeouts.

The Bears (17-11, 0-1) plated the first run of the game in the first inning on a wild pitch. It marked the first first-inning run the Sooners have allowed in 27 games this season, outscoring opponents 66-1 in the inning on the year.

Alo ensured OU wasn't behind for long, blasting her 15th home run of the season and No. 103 on her career in the bottom of the first on a two-run shot to left. Elam followed it up two batters later with her 10th home run of the season and sixth in the past three games to give OU a 3-1 lead after one. It was the 16th time this season Oklahoma has hit two-plus homers in one inning.

OU plated runs in each of the four innings they were at the plate. In the second, sophomore Jayda Coleman brought in one on an RBI single before Jennings blasted her second career grand slam in the third inning.

A passed ball in the fourth inning allowed Taylon Snow to come across home plate and put the game in run-rule territory.

Bahl quickly retired the side in order in the fifth, setting down two Bears via strikeout and giving OU its 23rd run-rule victory of the season and 12th straight.

Eight Sooners registered a hit in the game with four bringing in at least one run. Jennings paced the team in RBIs with four on her grand slam to accompany a 1-for-2, one walk performance. Alo and Coleman each went 1-for-1 with two and one RBI, respectively. Elam finished 1-for-3 with a solo home run and Snow went 2-for-2 with a walk and run scored.

With the win, Oklahoma has won 10 consecutive Big 12 openers (21-5 all-time) and 60 of its last 61 conference games.
