No. 1 Sooners Dominate Iowa in HOF Classic Finale
March 20, 2022 | Softball
OKLAHOMA CITY — No. 1 Oklahoma closed the Hall of Fame Classic in OKC on Sunday in dominating fashion, beating Iowa 20-0 in five innings.
The game was not short of highlights with freshman Jordy Bahl throwing a no-hitter, senior captain Lynnsie Elam hitting three home runs and super senior Jocelyn Alo blasting career homer No. 100.
OU hit six home runs on the day, capped by four in the fourth inning. It marked the most single-game homers and single-inning homers on the year for the Sooners. OU's 20 runs were also good for a season high.
Bahl's no-hitter was her second individual no-no of her freshman campaign and fourth if you include two that she combined on with fellow members of the Sooner pitching staff.
"It was definitely one of our better games offensively," said head coach Patty Gasso. "There were a few little trip ups defensively that kind of put a little stain on today, but Jordy throwing a no-hitter, Lynnsie Elam, Jocelyn Alo, Alyssa Brito, I mean all through the lineup, people are finding ways to hit balls hard.
"Overall, just really happy with our performance and just absolutely thrilled by the amount of people that are coming out and watching this team play." - Patty Gasso
OU started the game putting up four runs in the first. After an error allowed Alo to race home, Elam hit her first home run of the day on a three-run shot to left field.
In the second, sophomore Tiare Jennings ripped an RBI double to center prior to Elam's second straight three-run homer to left.
The Sooners put up seven more runs in the third on four hits and an error. Bases-loaded walks to Jennings and Elam, a fielder's choice RBI from junior Kinzie Hansen and a wild pitch started the Sooners outburst before a two-RBI double from sophomore Alyssa Brito and an RBI single from junior Rylie Boone concluded the OU scoring in the frame.
OU scored five runs all via the long ball in the fourth inning to reach the 20-run mark for the first time in 2022.
Alo got things started with career blast No. 100 and her 12th of the season. The super senior has hit homers in five of her last sixth games after hitting the record-breaker No. 96 in her home state of Hawaii last weekend.
"It definitely feels nice, but I'm just going to go up every at-bat ready to hit the ball hard," said Alo. "I'm not trying to hit a home run, just trying to get on base and do what's best for my team. I guess 100 is pretty nice, but just continuing to stay within the process and continue to go up from here."
Lyons hit a two-run blast for her third straight game leaving the yard prior to Elam's third homer of the day. It was the first time in the senior captain's career with three single-game home runs.
Additionally, Elam tied a program record for single-game homers, marking the fifth time in program history a Sooner has blasted three in one contest (MR: Jennings, Lyons vs. UTEP 2/11/21). The captain finished with eight RBIs in the game and 12 on the weekend.
Brito made it back-to-back blasts with her fourth home run of the season and third in the last four games to bring the final to 20-0, OU.
Bahl finished with eight strikeouts in the complete-game, no-hit performance, surrendering just two walks to the Hawkeyes.
The game was OU's 21st run-rule victory in 25 games played and the team's 15th shutout.
On the Hall of Fame Classic weekend, Oklahoma outscored its opponents 64-2 and hit 16 home runs, while the pitching staff held a 0.56 ERA and registered 46 strikeouts to nine walks for an opponent batting average of .114.
The crowd presence was felt on the weekend with a combined attendance of nearly 13,000 for OU's five games at Hall of Fame Stadium with just the lower bowl open.
The top-ranked Sooners travel to SEC country for a midweek contest against No. 8/11 Kentucky on Tuesday at 6 p.m. CT. The game can be seen on SEC Network and heard live on the radio on The Franchise 2 (103.3 FM/1560 AM) in Oklahoma and nationwide on the TuneIn app.
