Freeman Earns High Bar Champ, Sooners Finish Strong at Winter Cup

February 27, 2022 | Men's Gymnastics

FRISCO, Texas Oklahoma junior men's gymnast Jack Freeman posted a career-high on high bar to win the event title Sunday at the Winter Cup in Frisco, Texas.

All six former and current Sooners who competed for a U.S. Senior National Team spot on day two at the Cup finished inside the top 10 in at least one event to wrap up competition.

In his first Winter Cup since 2020, Freeman secured the event title on high bar with a two-day total of 27.850. He posted a 13.350 in Friday's opening session, followed by a career-high 14.500 on Sunday. Winter Cup has not awarded a 14.500 on high bar to a gymnast since 2019.

"I felt speechless, honestly so speechless," said Freeman. "That was the best high bar set I've ever done in my life. I had nothing to say, so many emotions. It was amazing."

After retaining his spot on the U.S. Senior National team on Friday, alumnus Yul Moldauer continued to shine with an all-around score of 84.454 on Sunday. He claimed second on pommel horse (28.478) and parallel bars (31.336) after his 15.793 parallel bar performance on Sunday. His two-day score of 28.338 earned him third on still rings.

Zach Nunez continued his streak of consistency this weekend, claiming third on pommel horse (27.350) and ninth on high bar (26.150).

Freshman Fuzzy Benas notched sixth on parallel bars (27.950) after earning a 14.200 on Sunday. He secured seventh on high bar with a two-day total of 26.400. The freshman finished eighth on vault (28.650) with a 14.400 on Friday and 14.250 on Sunday.

Fellow freshman Raydel Gamboa earned third on floor (27.450) and fifth on parallel bars (28.100).

Alumnus Colin Van Wicklen held strong after a hand injury kept him from competing all-around on day two. He earned fifth on vault (29.744), scoring 14.897 on Sunday. Van Wicklen's two-day total of 26.600 earned him eighth on still rings.

Oklahoma returns to competition this weekend in Springfield, Mass., vs Springfield College and William & Mary on Sunday, March 6 at 11 a.m. CT.
