Sooners Drop Top-20 Showdown in Austin

February 12, 2022 | Women's Basketball

AUSTIN, Texas – The 12th-ranked Oklahoma women's basketball team battled vs. No. 16 Texas in Austin on Saturday, dropping a 78-63 contest at the Frank Erwin Center.

Madi Williams led the Sooners with 16 points and five rebounds, while Taylor Robertson added 13 points of her own in the loss.

"I thought Texas was phenomenal today," head coach Jennie Baranczyk said. "I thought we started really well and then did a decent job in the second quarter until the end of the half. We didn't respond in the third and we're going to own this and get better. What a conference we get to play in."

The first quarter featured a back-and-forth affair as the Sooners jumped out to an early 13-9 lead behind made 3-pointers from Taylor Robertson and Nevaeh Tot. The Longhorns answered with a 6-1 run to close the frame and cut the OU lead to 18-17 after 10 minutes of play.

A Robertson floater opened up a 32-26 Sooner lead at the 5:14 mark of the second before the Horns responded with an Aliyah Matharu trey to spark a run that gave Texas a 35-34 lead. Buckets from Madi Williams and Robertson put the Sooners back in front, taking a 38-37 lead into the break.

The Longhorns took control in the third quarter, drawing eight fouls and heading to the free throw line 13 times compared the Sooners' just one trip to the line in the frame. Texas built its lead to 12 at the 3:52 mark of the third and then to 64-44 by the end of the quarter.

Oklahoma tried to find another round of Sooner magic, cutting the deficit to 15 early in the fourth quarter, but the Longhorns held off the run to snap Oklahoma's four-game winning streak.

The Sooners return to Norman on Wednesday, Feb. 16 for a matchup with Texas Tech (9-14, 2-10) at Lloyd Noble Center. That contest will tip at 6 p.m. and air on Sooner Sports TV. Oklahoma won the series' first matchup of the season, defeating the Lady Raiders 97-91 in Lubbock on Jan. 2.
