NORMAN – The 2022 Oklahoma women's gymnastics team took the floor and showcased its 2023 routines at its annual intrasquad Friday night at the Sam Viersen Gymnastics Center.
In a live-meet setting with two judges per event, the Sooners previewed their new routines and skills on all four events. Eight Sooners competed on each apparatus with three gymnasts in the all-around – juniors
Audrey Davis and
Katherine LeVasseur, and freshman
Faith Torrez.
On vault, OU had an impressive performance with seven 10.0 start-value vaults, including six Yurchenko 1.5s and a pike front half from junior
Audrey Lynn. The Sooners look to have a strong vault squad for the 2023 season with added difficulty and depth led by stuck Yurchenko 1.5s by Bowers and Sievers.
The Sooners bars squad returned most of their depth from 2022 and added Torrez to the lineup. Davis, the 2022 NCAA runner-up on bars, showed why she is one of the best bars workers in the country with her beautiful handstands and double-front half dismount. OU nailed its landings with four stuck dismounts by Davis, Bowers, LeVasseur and Sievers. Bowers and LeVasseur both nailed their handstands throughout their routine, while Sievers had an impressive Ray to Pak Salto combination.
A pair of new faces made an appearance on beam in newcomers Torrez and
Ava Siegfeldt. Familiar faces for the beam team include Davis, LeVasseur,
Ragan Smith and
Jenna Dunn. A steady lead off for the Sooners, Dunn nailed a solid triple series. Like she did at the 2022 NCAA Championships, Smith anchored the lineup with confidence and a strong routine.
On floor, the Sooners showed off their new choreography and music for the 2023 season. Norman native
Bell Johnson got things started with an entertaining and fun Harry Styles routine, while LeVasseur displayed a beautiful western style routine. Davis had a stunning and sassy performance, while Bowers, the 2022 NCAA runner-up on floor, was perfection with a routine that included an upgraded full-in for her first pass. Smith displayed a crowd-pleasing and interactive routine, while Torrez anchored the lineup with strong tumbling highlighted by a double layout to open the routine.
The most anticipated matchups of the 2023 season will take place inside Lloyd Noble Center with a pair of teams that participated in the 2022 NCAA Championships Finals. In their home opener, the Sooners will face Utah, which is coming off a third-place finish at the NCAA Championships, on Sunday, Jan. 22 at 6:45 p.m. CT. To kick off the month of March, OU welcomes SEC foe and NCAA runner-up Florida on Friday, March 3 at 7:45 p.m. CT.
In another exciting matchup at Lloyd Noble Center, the Sooners welcome Arizona State to Norman on Sunday, March 12 at 1:45 p.m. CT for their regular season finale and Senior Day. Other home meets include a pair of Fridays at 6:45 p.m. CT in February against a couple of Big 12 opponents – Iowa State (Feb. 3) and West Virginia (Feb. 24).
