Kindler Adds Fantastic Four for 2023

November 09, 2022 | Women's Gymnastics

NORMAN – Head coach K.J. Kindler and the Oklahoma women's gymnastics program announced the signing of four tremendous gymnasts Wednesday. Addison Fatta, Hannah Scheible and Keira Wells will join the Sooners for the 2023-24 season. Caitlin Smith will arrive in Norman early for the Spring 2023 semester.

"I am so thrilled to welcome these four incredible women to our program," Kindler stated. "Each one brings their own unique story to OU, and we plan to fill the blank pages with the amazing experiences that are to come.

"We search for student-athletes who fit the culture and drive of our program, and who value the family feeling that is evident when you live within the walls of the Sam Viersen practice facility. These women are the whole package. All four have also exhibited excellence in the classroom. They possess the character, charisma, discipline and resilience it takes to earn Championships."

Fatta, a native of Wrightsville, Pennsylvania, is a current senior elite gymnast training at Prestige Gymnastics under her coaches and parents Tony and Jen Fatta, along with Kevin Pope and Sarah Stallings.

"Addison has grown up in her parents' gym and has a real passion for the sport," Kindler said. "We have been watching her develop since she was so young, making many visits to her gym for her older teammates until it was finally time to recruit her! She is a disciplined and resilient woman with an insatiable hunger to keep getting better. I am inspired by her positive attitude and her willingness to see the glass as half full all the time! I know her joy and energy will enhance our program every step of the way.

"Addison belongs at Oklahoma. From the moment she stepped on campus, there was a comfort and a spark between her and our staff. She is coached by her parents, so these will be big shoes for us to fill. We will be motivated every day by that."

Fatta brings a wealth of elite experience to Oklahoma. A two-time national team member (2021, '22), Fatta made her international debut at the Szombathely World Challenge Cup last month where she won gold on vault and a bronze on bars. Last July, she was selected as a team alternate to the 2022 Pan American Championships in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Over the summer, she finished 10th in the all-around at the 2022 U.S. Gymnastics Championships and placed fifth on beam and sixth on bars at the 2022 U.S. Classic.

In 2021, Fatta was selected as one of only 16 women invited to take part in the U.S. Olympic Trials. She finished 11th overall at Trials. At the American Classic that same year, Fatta earned a silver on vault, finished fourth in the all-around, was seventh on bars and tied for eighth on floor.

"She will undoubtedly be an all-arounder for OU", Kindler noted. "She is simply great on all four events and will provide competitive experience at the highest level. I also believe she will be the kind of performer who will captivate Sooner fans. She is magnetic and special out there! Easily one of the best!"

USA Gymnastics also awarded Fatta the 2022 Sportsperson of the Year for her reputation as a hardworking and kind leader who listens to and supports her peers within the sport. Fatta was chosen by her fellow competitors for this honor.

"Addison has achieved so much already, but perhaps this is her biggest accomplishment of all," Kindler raved. "She has shown support, enthusiasm, and compassion for her USA teammates. Her strength of character and leadership have been recognized by those who work beside her. I cannot think of a more meaningful honor."

Also excelling in the classroom, Fatta attends Commonwealth Charter Academy where she has a 3.9 GPA and on the distinguished honor roll.

Fatta has three siblings: Alec, Tanner and Kaden. Both Alec and Tanner are collegiate swimmers at LaSalle and Towson, respectively. She plans to major in sports business at OU.

"I chose Oklahoma because I wanted to be a part of their amazing gymnastics team," Fatta said. "My favorite part of my official visit was getting to know the team and coaches better.

Scheible, a native of Kimball, Michigan, is a level 10 gymnast at All American Flames Gymnastix where she trains under her parents Joe and Melinda Scheible.

"You could say getting to know Hannah has been a family affair!," Kindler stated. "Her parents coach, own and operate the gym where Hannah has spent her life growing up in all things gymnastics. Her twin brother Zac is also a gymnast. It is an honor to know that after all the time she has spent in the sport, she feels at home at OU.

"Hannah and I connected early and have had amazing conversations as we have gone through this process. I love her tenacity and strength. Her confidence is illuminating, and I believe it makes all those around her walk a little taller. To know Hannah is to know she reaches for the big goal without a worry about falling short. She is humbly mindful of the areas in which she wants to improve to achieve those goals. She raises the expectation in the room, wherever she goes."

Scheible brings a wealth of national experience, competing as a level 10 since 2018. At the 2022 Women's Development Program National Championships, she earned gold on beam, silver in the all-around and bronze on vault. She also swept all four events and the all-around at the 2022 Region 5 Level 10 Regional Championships and 2022 Michigan Level 10 State Championships. Last February, Scheible competed at the prestigious Nastia Liukin Cup where she finished 10th on floor in the senior division.

In 2021, she was crowned national champion in the all-around and on beam and floor at the Women's Development Program National Championships. The two-time Development Program National Team member (2021, '22) also earned regional titles in the all-around and on vault, bars and beam, along with silver on beam, at the 2021 Region 5 Level 10 Regional Championships. She also was the Michigan State Level 10 champion in the all-around and on vault and bars, along with second on beam and floor in 2021.

"Hannah has shown the ability to rise to the occasion under extreme pressure," Kindler detailed. This is a special talent, with that 'it' factor that allows you to perform at your best in these moments. She is an all-around gymnast who will make an impact everywhere for the Sooners. Her potential is unlimited."

Perfect in the classroom, Scheible has been attending St. Clair County Community College for the past two years, where she holds a 4.0 GPA and is on the President's Honor List.

Scheible's mother, Melinda, was a collegiate gymnast at Central Michigan. She has a brother Zachary, who's also a competitive gymnast. She plans to major in nutritional sciences at OU.

"Oklahoma has exactly the master's degree I am looking for and I love the atmosphere in the gym," Scheible said. "I want to win in college and Oklahoma was the only place I felt that would help me reach my goals."

Caitlin Smith - Signing Day Article Photo

Caitlin Smith / Houston, Texas / Texas Connections Academy of Houston / World Champions Centre (WCC)

Smith, a Houston native, is a level 10 gymnast training at World Champions Centre (WCC) under Olympic coaches Cecile and Laurent Landi. She will join the Sooners early for the 2023 season.

"Caitlin was born in a Sooner Onesie!," Kindler said. "This is not an exaggeration! Her father, an OU alum, clearly made quite an impression on her while growing up. She exemplifies 'Sooner born, Sooner bred.' Attending many OU camps, she follows in the footsteps of other former campers who have also taken the leap to OU! However, when Caitlin attended OU on an official visit, it was the feeling of family that finally drew her here. The comradery and closeness of the team was something she identified as priceless when accepting our offer to become a Sooner.

"Caitlin has shown determination to push forward through some difficult setbacks. Her persistence shows her inner strength and resilience. I am impressed with her desire to push forward and her positive mindset. It is rare to see her without a smile from ear to ear!"

Smith brings extensive national experience to Oklahoma. The 2019 Junior Olympic National Team member won the national all-around crown, added a bronze on beam, placed fourth on bars and tied for eighth on vault at the 2019 J.O. National Championships. She also claimed the 2019 Regional floor title and finished with a silver in the all-around and on vault and bars at the 2019 Region 3 Level 10 Regional Championships.

In 2021, Smith tied for fifth on floor and shared sixth place in the all-around at the Women's Development Program National Championships. She had top-three finishes in every event and in the all-around at the 2021 Region 3 Level 10 Regional Championships and 2021 Texas Level 10 State Championships. At regionals, she was crowned the all-around and beam champion, while finishing with a silver on bars and bronze on vault and floor. On the state level, Smith won the all-around and beam title, finished with a silver on vault and floor, and earned a bronze on bars.

For the 2022 season, Smith was crowned the 2022 Texas Level 10 State Bars Champion and finished third on vault at the event. At the 2022 Region 3 Level 10 Regional Championships, she placed second on vault and bars. Competing in the Individual Event Specialist (IES) Wildcard division, Smith finished ninth on bars at the 2022 Women's Development Program National Championships.

Also shining in the classroom, Smith attends Texas Connections Academy of Houston where she has a 4.23 GPA and has been on the distinguished honor roll for the past three years.

"Caitlin has tremendous quickness and power," Kindler said. "She has a unique skill set on bars, beam and floor, and the ability to crack the lineups on all three. What I think is her greatest asset though, is her love for the university and her desire to represent OU with pride and integrity. That loyalty and ambition will take you anywhere you want to go."

Smith is the daughter of David and Shelia Smith, who both graduated from Big 12 Institutions. David is an OU alum, while Shelia graduated from Texas Tech. She also has one sister, Rebekah. Smith plans to major in marketing and communications at OU.

"The small details made the entire visit very special," Smith said. "I loved the photoshoot and as a huge football fan, seeing all the hype of a big game was so fun! The interaction between the team and the coaches truly shows the Sooner Magic and what makes OU so special: It's the people!"

Keira Wells - Signing Day Article Photo

Keira Wells / Augusta, Kan. / Augusta High School / 316 Gymnastics Academy

A native of Augusta, Kansas, Wells is a level 10 gymnast at 316 Gymnastics Academy where she trains under Tristian Rodriquez.

"Through this process Keira has shown a loyalty towards OU that can be rare," Kindler stated. "I believe she thrives on the idea of being close to friends and family in Wichita, (Kansas), while getting to explore her collegiate dream only a couple hours down Highway 35.

"She has shown me an ambition to find ways to continue to improve her gymnastics through creativity, pursuing new skills and never giving up! Keira is respectful and thoughtful, and one of the things I love about her is her sense of humor! She is a person who values trust and relationships and is always open to good advice."

Bringing the power on vault, Wells has been a level 10 gymnast since 2017. A four-time level 10 national qualifier (2018, '19, '21, '22), Wells is a three-time consecutive national vault champion (2019, '21, '22).

In 2021, she won vault with a career-high perfect 10 at the Region 3 Level 10 Regional Championships, where she also earned silver in the all-around and on beam. Along with her 2021 national vault title, Wells also placed sixth in the all-around at the 2021 Women's Development Program National Championships. She also was the Kansas State Level 10 champion in the all-around and on vault, beam and floor, along with third on bars in 2021.

Along with being crowned the 2019 J.O. National vault champion, Wells was also third in the all-around at the 2019 Region 3 Level 10 Regional Championships and earned the Kansas State Level 10 titles in the all-around and on vault, bars and beam.

"Keira is the athlete that quietly, confidently sneaks up on you and knocks your socks off," Kindler stated. "We have watched Keira for many years and have been impressed with her raw talent and unbelievable quickness. There are very few gymnasts in this country that can say they are a three-time National Champion on any event, but she can yell it loud and proud.

"Her vault is absolutely jaw dropping, and to seize the moment under the stress of the National Championship, and as a defending Champion is simply extraordinary. However, Keira has so much to offer on every event. She is continually learning new skills and raising her level of execution. The Sooners will count on her on all four (events)."

The definition of a student-athlete, Wells attends Augusta High School where she has been on the honor roll the past three years, while attaining a 3.8 GPA. She was also inducted into the National Honor Society in 2021.

Wells is the daughter of Aaron and Amy Wells, who are both Wichita State University alumni. She has two siblings: Keely and Chase. Wells plans to major in exercise science at OU.

"I chose Oklahoma because I have grown up going to the gymnastics camps," Wells said. "I have always been told that I have not reached my full potential and I know that the world class coaches at OU will help me reach it. I want to be coached by the best and win a national championship."
