Coldon Named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week

November 21, 2022 | Football

NORMAN — Oklahoma defensive back C.J. Coldon has been named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week after registering seven tackles, three pass breakups and his team-leading third interception of the season in Saturday's 28-13 win over No. 24 Oklahoma State, the league office announced Monday.

Coldon's interception was the first of OU's four on the night and his three breakups were his first of the season. Six of his seven tackles were solo stops. The Belleville, Ill., product helped the OU defense hold the Cowboys to just a .537 completion rate and to 4.7 yards per play. OSU had 18 possessions and scored just one touchdown in the game.

A redshirt senior transfer from Wyoming, Coldon has played in 10 games this season and started each of the last two at cornerback. Twenty of his 30 tackles this year have come in the last two contests. His 13 stops at West Virginia were the most by an OU defensive back since Hatari Byrd had 15 tackles against Tulsa in 2015.

This is Coldon's first Big 12 honor and OU's fourth Big 12 weekly award of the season. Quarterback Dillon Gabriel was named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week on Sept. 10 and Oct. 17 and punter Michael Turk was named Big 12 co-Special Teams Player of the Week on Oct. 31.

Oklahoma concludes the regular season at Texas Tech on Saturday in Lubbock, Texas. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. and the game will be televised by FS1.
