NORMAN – In front of a program record crowd of 3,702 fans, the Oklahoma volleyball team were swept by No. 1 Texas, falling in three sets (3-0), 25-14, 25-19, 25-10, on Saturday evening inside McCasland Field House.
"First, we have to thank the crowd for helping us break an attendance record tonight (3,702)," head coach
Lindsey Gray-Walton said. "That's unbelievable and I think that speaks to the growth of the game. Oklahoma volleyball is growing, and Texas is a good team, the No. 1 team in the country for a reason."
The Longhorns led in five of the six major statistical categories, but the Sooners out blocked top-ranked Texas, 7-2. Offensively, Texas out hit the Sooners on a .354 to .119 clip with a 44-27 advantage in kills.
Sophomore
Megan Wilson led the Sooners with nine kills on the night, followed by freshmen
Alexis Shelton and
Taylor Preston with six and five kills, respectively. Preston also added six digs.
Sophomore
Payton Chamberlain notched 20 assists while also adding six digs and three blocks.
Defensively, the Sooners were led by graduated student
Adria Oliver who posted five blocks, while sophomore libero
Callie Kemohah tallied 10 digs.
The Longhorns opened the first set with a 13-7 lead and never looked back, forcing an OU timeout. Texas doubled their lead, 18-9, to force a second timeout for the Sooners. After the break, the Longhorns went on a 3-0 run to extend the lead, 21-9. The Longhorns would go on to take the first match, 25-14.
Texas went on a 4-0 run to start off the second set after a pair of service aces from freshman Emma Halter. A pair of services aces from Wilson brought the Sooners within one, 4-3. OU went on to make an impressive comeback with its first lead of the match after kills from Chamberlain and Preston, 8-7. The Sooners and Longhorns went on a back-and-forth battle, with OU leading 15-14 at one point. After that, the momentum turned in favor of the Longhorns, who went on a 4-0 run to take back the lead, 18-15. The Longhorns would have a 2-0 advantage in the match after a 3-0 run to close out the set, 25-19.
Both teams were knotted, 2-2, to begin the third and final match. Although, the momentum turned in favor of the Longhorns who posted a 11-5 lead to for an OU timeout. The Longhorns doubled their lead once again in the match, 18-9, to for the Sooners' final timeout. OU went on a 7-1 run to close out the set and match, 25-10.
"Whether it's the first time you've ever competed against the No. 1 team, the first time you've ever sold out a crowd, we'll take all those moments because they are big moments to building a championship program and that's what we're trying to do here," Gray-Walton noted.
The Sooners visit the Little Apple for a mid-week match at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday against Kansas State in Manhattan.
