NORMAN — Oklahoma punter Michael Turk has been named the Big 12 Co-Special Teams Player of the Week after averaging 49.3 yards on six punts in Oklahoma's 27-14 win at Iowa State on Saturday, the league office announced Monday.
Turk, a redshirt senior from Dallas, Texas, boomed 61- and 60-yard punts in the fourth quarter to flip the field with the Sooners holding on to a seven-point lead. The 60-yarder was downed a the two-yard line, and OU's defense registered takeaways on both ensuing ISU possessions. His 61-yard punt was a season long.
While his punting helped the Sooners seal the win late, Turk also helped account for Oklahoma's first touchdown of the game, becoming the first OU punter to throw a TD pass in 52 years. Turk, as the holder, flipped the ball to kicker Zach Schmit for a two-yard score on a fake field goal attempt for a 10-3 second-quarter lead. Before Turk on Saturday, the last full-time punter to throw a touchdown pass was Joe Wylie against Nebraska in 1970.
Turk leads the Big 12 and ranks sixth nationally with his 45.8-yard punt average this season. Thirteen of his 40 punts have been at least 50 yards and 13 have been downed inside the 20.
This is Turk's first Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week honor this season and the second of his OU career. He also shared the award on Nov. 22 last season. This is OU's third Big 12 weekly award of the season. Quarterback Dillon Gabriel was named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week on Sept. 10 and Oct. 17.
Oklahoma plays host to Baylor on Saturday at Gaylord Family – Oklahoma Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. and the game will be televised via Big 12 Now on ESPN+. Tickets are available at www.SoonerSports.com.
