October 26, 2022 | Baseball

NORMAN – The University of Oklahoma baseball team will open the 2023 season at home and play 30 games at L. Dale Mitchell Park as part of a 56-game schedule announced Thursday by sixth-year head coach Skip Johnson. The Sooners are coming off a Big 12 tournament championship and a national runner-up finish.

Oklahoma will play seven of its first eight contests at L. Dale Mitchell Park, opening with a three-game series Feb. 17-19 against California Baptist. Bedlam returns to Norman for three Big 12 conference games May 18-20 to conclude the regular season.

The Sooners will play premier non-conference series against Stanford (March 30-April 2 at Mitchell Park) and at Gonzaga (May 12-14 in Spokane, Wash.) and participate in the Frisco College Baseball Classic March 3-5, facing California, Mississippi State and Ohio State at Dr. Pepper Ballpark in Frisco, Texas. OU will also return to Globe Life Field Feb. 22 for a contest against Abilene Christian.

Seven of Oklahoma's 23 opponents participated in the NCAA postseason last year, two reached the College World Series (Stanford and Texas) and three hosted regionals (Stanford, Texas and Oklahoma State). OU will play a total of 22 games against opponents that reached the NCAA Tournament last year, and 14 of those games will be played at home. The schedule also includes 25 contests against eight opponents that ended the 2022 season ranked in the top 50 of the RPI.

"We're excited about our schedule for the 2023 season," Johnson said. "The balance of tough, quality opponents will challenge our team from February through May, and give our fans a chance to watch our players compete against good teams at L. Dale Mitchell Park all season. We know the Big 12 will be one of the top leagues in the nation again, and we filled the two open conference weekends this year with a home series against one of the premier college baseball programs in the country in Stanford, and a road series at Gonzaga, which had an outstanding season last year and made the NCAA Tournament. We are always thrilled to play a game at Globe Life Field and to compete in the Frisco Classic against some outstanding programs."

The Big 12 Conference schedule runs 24 games over eight weekend series. Oklahoma will play home series at L. Dale Mitchell Park against Oklahoma State, TCU, Texas Tech and Kansas. OU's road series will be played at Texas, Baylor, Kansas State and West Virginia.

Oklahoma closes the regular season with the Phillips 66 Bedlam Series, May 18-20, at L. Dale Mitchell Park. The Sooners and Cowboys split four meetings last season.

Oklahoma plays four straight days at home to begin the season, facing California Baptist Feb. 17-19 and Air Force on Monday, Feb. 2, and then the Sooners will face Abilene Christian at Globe Life Field on Feb. 22. In addition to its weekend series against California Baptist, Stanford and Gonzaga, OU will also play a home weekend series against Rider (Feb. 24-26) and a road weekend series at Houston (March 10-12) in non-conference action.

Oklahoma opens Big 12 conference play at home against TCU, March 17-19. OU's following two conference series will be on the road at Kansas State (March 24-26) and Baylor (April 6-8), before hosting Texas Tech (April 14-16) at Mitchell Park.
