October 13, 2022 | Volleyball

NORMAN – The Oklahoma volleyball team will be hosting Alumni Weekend against Iowa State at 6 p.m. Saturday inside McCasland Field House. This week we will feature top alumni returning to Norman for this weekend's festivities.

We near the end of our Alumni Spotlight features for this week with Francie Ekwerekwu. One of the most distinguished Sooners in program history, Ekwerekwu was a two-time All-Big 12 Team honoree, while also excelling in the classroom, making the 2008 CoSIDA Academic All-District Third Team and earning four Academic All-Big 12 First Team honors.

She also helped the Sooners reach their third Sweet Sixteen in program history during the 2010 NCAA Tournament, while etching her name seven times in the record book, including program-best records during the 30-point rally scoring era in a five-set match for hitting percentage with .519 vs. Baylor on Nov. 14, 2007, and solo blocks (four) vs. Kansas on Nov. 3, 2007. She is also ninth-best in program history for career (2006-11) solo blocks (54) and total blocks (327). All during the 30-point rally scoring era in 2007, Ekwerekwu holds the seventh-best record in program history for season block assists (95), while fifth-best for season hitting percentage (.284) and solo blocks (17).

Why did you choose OU?
I chose OU because …
  1. The University had a tradition and standard of excellence in almost everything.
  2. It was just a three-hour road trip from home so I knew my mom could make it to most of my games.
  3. I had such a great initial visit to campus with upperclassman and teammate, Anna Stadel, aka "STUD!"
What is your best memory at OU?
Hitting the game winning kill when we BEAT TEXAS … at Texas (in 2008)!

What do you miss most from your time at OU?
My teammates — all our crazy times and endless laughs. Also, the food from the athletic dorms' cafe —when it was at the Bud! I'm a throwback OU athlete!

How did OU prepare you to be successful after your volleyball career?
OU gave me a strong foundation in academic and life skills to go chase my dreams of continuing to be great in many aspects of life. The university gave me an immensely, vast network of people, who are now like family to me, part of my support group, and/or professional contacts for me. They have all been major allies to my success.
