LAWRENCE, Kan. – Once again erasing a 15-plus-point deficit, the Oklahoma women's basketball team stormed back to knock off Kansas on the road at Allen Fieldhouse on Saturday, 82-68.
Taylor Robertson and Madi Williams both reached the 20-point mark as Williams became the 12th Sooner all-time to hit 1,500 points in their career. Oklahoma (13-2, 2-1 Big 12) outscored Kansas (9-2, 0-1 Big 12) 68-42 over the final three quarters.
"I think we did a phenomenal job of just resetting after that first quarter," head coach Jennie Baranczyk said. "I think we were searching that entire quarter for what was going wrong, and we literally just reset and knew that we could just play. We are a really, really good basketball team when we just go play and we showed that again tonight."
The Sooners dug themselves into a hole in the first quarter, turning the ball over nine times and giving Kansas a 26-14 lead after 10 minutes. But Baranczyk's team stormed back in the second quarter as Skylar Vann scored 10 points in the frame while the Sooner defense held KU to 5-of-17 shooting to eat away at the deficit, which had grown to 16. Williams sunk a 3-pointer late in the half as the Sooners entered the break down 39-37.
Oklahoma tied the game with the second half's first basket, a pull-up jumper from Liz Scott. A few minutes later, Vann fought through contact to lay it in and give the Sooners a 43-41 lead with 5:46 left in the third. OU fought off a strong Kansas attack throughout the rest of the frame and possessed a 6-point lead heading into the fourth.
Up 64-60 with 4:31 remaining in the contest, the Sooners' high-powered offense turned on the jets, rattling off a 15-4 run to put the Jayhawks away rn route to a decisive 14-point road victory. Williams was the catalyst to the dominant finish, scoring 13 of her 20 points in the final frame.
Saturday's matchup featured 11 lead changes before the Sooners finally took control late in the game. OU held Kansas to 37.9% shooting on the night and just 1-of-17 (.059) from behind the 3-point line. Meanwhile, the Sooners finished with a 43.8% shooting clip, with 10 of the team's 28 makes coming from deep.
Robertson finished with a game-high 24 points on an efficient 8-of-11 performance in her home state, making four more 3-pointers as she now sits just four treys away from Laurie Koehn's Big 12 record. Williams dropped in 20 points, hitting that threshold for the third consecutive game, but the senior also grabbed 11 rebounds to notch her 20th career double-double.
Saturday's win marked the 850th in program history, making Oklahoma the 53rd Division I school secure that many wins and just the fifth Big 12 program. The Sooners resume Big 12 play on Wednesday, Jan. 12, when they host No. 14 Baylor at the Lloyd Noble Center at 6 p.m
