NORMAN ā The Oklahoma gymnastics team posted an incredible 198.200 to break the 198-mark for the first time this season in a win over No. 5 Denver (196.625) Sunday afternoon inside Lloyd Noble Center.
The meet was highlighted by a perfect 10 on beam by Carly Woodard. Woodard's perfect score was the first of her career and the third this year by any Sooner. Woodard joins Katherine LeVasseur (vault) and Allie Stern (vault) as Sooners with perfect scores in 2022.
Woodard's 10 clinched her the beam title for the meet as the Sooners picked up three event titles. Audrey Davis earned bars with a near-perfect 9.975 and the all-around with a 39.600. Ragan Smith took home floor with a 9.95. Denver's Lynnzee Brown earned vault with a 9.975.
"Going into the routine it's the same thing that I think every week. It's trust your training," Woodard said. "I do this so many times in the gym, so many times a day, and just relying on that to come out in the competition. During the routine it's one skill at a time. I think about doing one skill, hitting that, moving on to the next skill. And then afterwards it was obviously really great, landing it was a good finish, and so I was super excited. And it was just a hit routine for me, and it was the best one I've done obviously for me to get that ten, but it was a surreal experience."
The Sooners and Pioneers were tied after the first rotation as OU tallied a 49.325 on vault and Denver the same on bars. Audrey Davis led off with a strong Yurchenko full for a season-high 9.85. Danae Fletcher followed with a 9.8 and Sheridan Ramsey added a 9.850 in the No. 3 spot. Allie Stern tallied a 9.850 on her 1.5 in the No. 4 spot. Katherine LeVasseur continued to impress on vault as she tallied a 9.9 in the No. 5 spot. LeVasseur has now scored at least a 9.9 on the event in every meet this season. Jordan Bowers anchored with a 9.875.
The highest bars score of the season for the Sooners in the second rotation gave OU the edge at the halfway point with a 49.550 to Denver's 49.275 on vault. Danielle Sievers set a career high in the leadoff position with a 9.9, followed by a season-best 9.925 from LeVasseur. Fletcher tallied a 9.825 in the No. 3 spot, followed by a 9.875 from Ragan Smith. Bowers added her second 9.875 of the night in the No. 5 spot. As the anchor, Davis set a new career high, earning a near-perfect 9.975 to close out the rotation.
"I was really excited about the meet," head coach K.J Kindler said. "I thought they came out very clean on vault. We didn't have any absolutely perfect landings, but the vaults were high, had great execution, small landing errors, very tight, really pleased with that. Jordan Bowers last time we were in this building had not made her vault, so that was really good to get over the hump for her. Bars, just missing some dismounts there, we stuck two dismounts. Kat stuck her dismount and Audrey Davis, and their scores clearly reflected that. Dani did an impeccable routine just had a small error but again really great on the bar just missing landings by a hair so definitely can capitalize there in the future."
On beam, the Sooners set a new team high with a 49.700, thanks to a perfect score. The 49.700 is the third-highest beam score in program history. Super senior Carly Woodard picked up the first perfect score of her career with a 10.0 in the No. 5 spot. Woodard showed off her impressive scale and stuck dismount as she picked up the Sooners' first perfect score of the season on beam. Jenna Dunn nailed her triple series as always and stuck her gainer full to lead things off with a 9.9. LeVassuer notched a career-high on beam as she was nearly perfect in the No. 3 spot for a career-best 9.975. In the No. 4 spot, Davis was stunning as always to tally a 9.875 for the Sooners. Anchoring was Smith with a stuck dismount and a 9.95.
"Balance beam just can't say enough about Katherine" Kindler said. "She jumped in after an error, which those happen, and we know those are gonna happen, and the goal is that the athlete stays in their rhythm and doesn't panic, doesn't think to themselves, ok I have to stay on now because that's really the situation. So really proud of Kat how she kind of got the beam lineup back on track, and then all the routines afterward were impeccable. Carly has done so many amazing beam routines, never to receive the 10, so so excited for her tonight. Probably makes that fifth year all worth it just from that one beam routine so really proud of her. And Ragan's just been a rock for us the last three weeks. A 9.95 tonight with the pressure, so really proud of this group. 49.7 is a gigantic beam score."
On floor, the Sooners notched a season-best 49.625. Bell Johnson led things off with a 9.850, followed by a career-high 9.9 from Davis. In the No. 3 spot, Woodard tallied a 9.925 for her second career-high of the night. Fletcher added a 9.925 of her own for a career high score. Bowers tallied the third straight 9.925 in a row for the Sooners and Smith anchored with a 9.95 to close out the meet.
"This was the event I was most impressed with tonight," Kindler said. "No doubt about it. They were dancing eloquently and putting on a show for the crowd really. Putting on a show for us. I was just so impressed with the way they were able to collect themselves after (Denver's) Lynnzee (Brown) got injured which is very impactful for both teams. It's impactful even for the opposing team because you never want to see anyone get injured like that. And also, you have to go to that event and be able to stay focused and dialed in, and sometimes that's very difficult to do, so I was really proud of how they performed. Bell getting us off to this amazing start. Ragan is just the best exclamation point at the end. Danae for her home floor debut, I think she's still saving it up a little at the end, but man she is captivating. I was just really proud of the floor team. To me that was the highlight of the night."
The Sooners will continue their three-match homestand on Friday, Feb. 4, against TWU. The meet is slated for a 6:45 p.m. start inside Lloyd Noble Center.
