NORMAN – For the first time since week one of the 2017-18 season the Oklahoma women's basketball team is ranked in the AP Top 25. After receiving votes in the preseason poll and first eight editions of the season poll, the Sooners appear at No. 23 this week.
The Sooners (12-1, 1-0 Big 12) debut in the ranking after a 97-91 win to open Big 12 play over Texas Tech. Head coach
Jennie Baranczyk has Oklahoma on a nine-game winning streak, its longest since 2008-09, and its best overall start since 2006-07 when the team started 17-1.
Oklahoma has been a staple in the AP Poll over the last two decades, appearing inside the nation's top 25 in 68 percent of polls since the turn of the century, including a streak of 119 consecutive weeks ranked from 2006-12.
This year's Sooner team is led by Naismith Award watch list honoree
Madi Williams who has posted five double-doubles this, including a 25 point and 14 rebound outing in the upset over No. 16 BYU.
Taylor Robertson, now OU's all-time 3-point leader, aids in producing the Sooners' 89.7 points per game, good for second-most in the nation.
The Big 12 lands nine of its 10 teams in the top 60 nationally in AP Poll all-time appearances, led by Texas (3rd), Baylor (12th) and Oklahoma (25th). The league's 90 percent of teams appearing in the top 60 is second in the country to only to the SEC who places 13 of its 14 teams (.929) on that list.
Top-25 basketball returns to the Lloyd Noble Center on Wednesday when the Sooners host No 12 Iowa State (12-1, 1-0 Big 12) at 6 p.m. That contest will mark the first ranked women's matchup in Norman since the then-No. 19 Sooners fell to No. 2 Baylor on Feb. 27, 2017.
