No. 3 Sooners Topped by No. 4 Utah
SALT LAKE CITY – In a tough road environment, the No. 3 Oklahoma women's gymnastics team was topped by No. 4 Utah, 197.775-196.650.
Freshman Jordan Bowers had a strong meet, earning the vault title with a near-perfect 9.975. Sophomore Audrey Davis earned her second bars title of the season with a 9.925. Junior Ragan Smith took home the beam title with a near-perfect 9.975 to tie her career high.
The meet started off with a tie after the first rotation with both teams earning a 49.450 on their respective events. On bars, Katherine LeVasseur led things off with a 9.825, followed by a career-high 9.875 from Danielle Sievers. Karrie Thomas added a 9.9 in the No. 3 spot as she nailed her double layout dismount, followed by a 9.85 from Ragan Smith. Audrey Davis secured the high score of the rotation with a 9.925. Bowers anchored with a stuck dismount and a 9.9.
Utah took the slight advantage after the second rotation with a 49.350 on bars to the Sooners' 49.325 on vault. Davis led off with a 9.775 on her Yurchenko full. Making her collegiate debut, Danae Fletcher earned a 9.800 on a strong full. Sheridan Ramsey added a 9.825 in the No. 3 spot on a nearly stuck full. LeVasseur was stunning once again, nearly sticking her 1.5 for a 9.95. In the anchor spot, Bowers got redemption after a fall in week one, earning a near perfect 9.975.
The Utes extended their lead with a 49.475 on beam to OU's 49.200 on floor. Davis led off floor with a career best 9.825, showcasing her dramatic side with fierce choreography and strong tumbling. Bell Johnson added a 9.875 in the No. 2 spot. Carly Woodard brought Oklahoma to Utah with her country-themed music and her strong tumbling earned her a 9.875 in the No. 4 spot. Bowers kept her strong night going with a dramatic floor routine for a 9.9. Smith anchored with a 9.725.
The Sooners had a tough beam rotation, having to count a fall. Jenna Dunn led things off with a strong triple series and stuck gainer dismount to tie her career-high with a 9.925. Bowers wrapped up her all-around night with a 9.775 for a career-high 39.550. Davis wrapped up her night with a 9.850 on beam to earn a career-high 39.375 in the all-around. After falls in the No. 4 and No. 5 spots, Smith anchored with a near-perfect routine for a career-high 9.975.
The Sooners are back in action on Saturday, Jan. 22, for a tri-meet at Arizona with Arizona and Stanford.
