Women's Golf Opens Season at Sam Golden Invitational

DENTON, TEXAS – The Oklahoma women's golf team is slated to open the 2021-22 season with the Sam Golden Invitational at the Wildhorse Golf Club at Robson Ranch in Denton, Texas Sept. 13-14.

The two-day tournament starts with 36 holes on Monday, Sept. 13 and the final 18 on Tuesday, Sept. 14. Both rounds have an 8:30 a.m., start on the par 72, 6,288-yard course.

The 15-team field features six teams that are ranked or receiving votes in the Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) Preseason Poll with the Sooners receiving nine votes to start the season. OU is joined by fellow Big 12 competitors No. 4 Oklahoma State, (RV) Texas Tech, TCU, and Kansas State. Texas A&M, Houston and Tulsa are also receiving votes from the WGCA.

The Sooners send Mikhaela Fortuna, Meagan Winans, Maria Fernanda Martinez, Libby Winans and Hannah Screen to Denton. Screen leads the OU returners from last season, posting an even-par average through 24 rounds last season, which included 10 rounds in the 60s and six top-20 finishes.

Fortuna boasted the second-best scoring average of the OU contingent from last season and finished her 12 rounds with a +0.50 to par average with two top-20 finishes.

L. Winans recorded the second-most rounds in the 60s with four and was the only Sooner other than Screen to record a top-5 finish in 2020-21. M. Winans, a freshman from Richardson, Texas, joins her sister L. Winans for her first tournament in the Crimson and Cream.

Fernanda Martinez recorded two top-20 finishes last season, while competing in 21 rounds of competition.

HISTORY

The Sam Golden Invitational at the Wildhorse Golf Club will be in its first season of competition. North Texas, the host school for the tournament, also hosts The Bruzzy in the spring.

FORMAT

Fifty-four holes will be played over two days with 36 holes being played Monday, Sept. 13 and the final 18 on Tuesday, Sept. 14. Both days of competition will start at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start.
